The global food problem comprises the lack of food provision for the Earth's population. Over 1 billion people suffer from starvation and undernourishment worldwide. High costs and low affordability also mean billions cannot eat healthily or nutritiously. Since 2008, WAFA Awards has been committed to the UN Global Compact corporate responsibility initiative and its principles in the areas of clean water, hunger, sustainability, and the environment. WAFA supports 9 Sustainable Development Goals.
The world produced more than enough food to feed everyone, but 811 million people still go hungry. From 2019 to 2022, the number of undernourished people grew by as many as 150 million, a crisis driven largely by conflict, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Those living in poverty often experience food insecurity, poor hygiene, and a lack of access to water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as inadequate access to health care and education, all of which contribute to hunger.
By raising awareness of the sustainable solutions created by communities and entrepreneurs, WAFA seeks to end hunger worldwide. And our primary mission is to identify these silent heroes offering low-tech, high-impact solutions and to bring them to public and professional attention so that they can attract support.
Because of an unprecedented exposure, projects that could not take off earlier due to a lack of resources will scale up and replicate. WAFA's mission is to identify and promote outstanding sustainability entrepreneurs in the area of water, air, and food worldwide. These "silent heroes" beat the odds to develop breakthrough solutions for the poor and forgotten. Our Selection Committee of international experts evaluates and certifies these projects.
