Project Report | Mar 5, 2012
2011 a Great Success

By Ginna Brelsford | Executive Director

We have just updated the project's fundraising goal and plans for using future contributions. Please continue to support this growing girls' school in 2012! Please note that the Safer World Fund continues to provide a 50% match until their funds run out. And GlobalGiving will add another 30% for all donations made on March 14. Mark your calendar!

I am pleased to report that 2011 was a great success. With your help, we met our goal of raising $50,000* to complete the work we had planned on this girls' school. We worked with the community to build the kindergarten rooms, 500 student desks, desks for teachers, library shelves, a latrine, and a guard room. As previously reported, we formally dedicated the school in April. Later in the year we reached a major milestone with the graduation of the first 40 girls from 12th grade! And 250 kindergarteners will enroll in the spring. Thank you so much for your help!

There is more to do. Looking forward to 2012, we have plans to build a driveway and a sidewalk, plus a drainage system behind the school. In addition, as part of our goal of helping the 12 schools for girls that we have built in Balkh Province improve their curricula and become self-sustaining, we have hired two Afghan women--a college educated teacher and an assistant--to serve as liaisons between our office and the schools. These women will provide communications between our office and the schools. They will play a critical role in helping us overcome language, cultural and security issues that sometimes make it difficult to visit the schools or to communicate with the staff, students, parents and other members of the community.

I am also pleased to announce that the World Affairs Council honored Ayni's founder, Julie Bolz, for her work to build Afghan schools with the 2011 World Citizen Award. See the link below.

*That includes over $28,000 in individual donations through GlobalGiving, over $12,000 in matching funds from the Safer World Fund, and private contributions from other sources.
