Warm Greetings to Our Esteemed Supporters!
As we reflect on the past year at Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR), it's heartening to witness the remarkable strides we've made in championing the rights of children and families at risk of statelessness. Our journey, marked by resilience and unwavering commitment, has been a testament to the power of collective effort in making a tangible difference. This report encapsulates our triumphs, ongoing endeavors, and the exciting roadmap for 2024.
2023: A Year of Impactful Achievements
Empowering Through Knowledge and Collaboration
Our capacity-building initiatives have been a cornerstone of our success. Over 500 social workers now carry the torch of knowledge, thanks to our training programs on childhood statelessness. Collaborative workshops in Mpumalanga, in partnership with organizations like Centre for Child Law and Save the Children, have equipped frontline workers with vital tools to safeguard migrant children's rights.
Advocacy: Raising Voices, Raising Awareness
Launching a nationwide campaign against the Department of Home Affairs' ID blocking practices marked a milestone in our advocacy efforts. This initiative, spotlighting the plight of children, has been pivotal in driving societal and governmental change. Our comprehensive guidebook, developed with the South African Human Rights Commission, is another feather in our cap, simplifying the documentation process for children across South Africa.
Legal Milestones: Justice and Fairness for All
Our legal triumphs have set new precedents. From landmark High Court judgments favoring healthcare access to successful birth registration drives, our legal team has been at the forefront, ensuring justice and dignity for the underrepresented.
Looking Ahead: Our Focus for 2024
Strengthening Citizenship Rights for Stateless Children
In 2024, we're sharpening our focus on the South African Citizenship Act. Our goal is to ensure that every child in South Africa has a name and nationality, as enshrined in the Constitution. We'll delve into legal advocacy, policy engagement, and public campaigns to tackle statelessness head-on.
Streamlining the Department of Home Affairs
Addressing the inefficiencies within the Department of Home Affairs is another critical goal. Through policy dialogue, monitoring, and legal support, we aim to make the path to citizenship smoother and more transparent for all.
Responding to Proposed Legal Reforms
The White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration, and Refugee Protection is on our radar. Our response will involve meticulous analysis, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy to protect the rights of the most vulnerable, particularly children.
A Heartfelt Thank You
As we embark on another year of advocacy and action, we pause to express our deepest gratitude to each of you – our donors, partners, and supporters. Your unwavering belief in our mission fuels our endeavors. Together, we've created ripples of change, and with your continued support, these ripples will transform into waves of lasting impact.
Here's to a brighter, more inclusive future for every child in South Africa. Thank you for standing with us in this noble journey.
Warm regards,
