Why, you may ask, are you showing us and telling us about these three birds? We’ve seen them before! Well, yes, you have seen them before. Sadly, we are at the end of our non-invasive options to restore these three birds to health. All three now need surgery to try to resolve their health issues. These are extremely expensive surgeries and are dangerous surgeries especially for Jewels and Denver due to their extremely small size.
Simba is an approximately 11-year-old Military Macaw that was relinquished to us. Simba has a foreign body in his gizzard, abnormal intestines, is a plucker, and is lacking in muscle mass. He tested negative for lead and zinc but positive for ganglioneuritis antibodies. Simba's veterinary costs to date are $1,644.89. We now need to have the foreign body in Simba’s gizzard surgically removed. The cost of this surgery will be $4,350.00.
Jewels is a Parrotlet that was relinquished to us on 10/24/21. Jewels had MANY foreign bodies trapped in her gizzard and was an extreme plucker and in a great deal of discomfort. We have thus far spent $4,505.18 in veterinary expenses for Jewels. Our avian veterinarian always exhausts all non-invasive treatments first. Jewels has had 30 days of chelation therapy with no success. This was followed by a psyllium treatment that had marginal results. A second psyllium treatment was given along with a Lupron injection. The results were poor. The only option at this point to rid Jewels of the foreign bodies in her gizzard is a surgery that will cost $4,350.00! She is only 5-6 years old and deserves the chance to live out her life free of discomfort and free of the toxins her foreign bodies are releasing into her tiny body.
Denver is also a Parrotlet that was relinquished to us. Denver and a number of other parrotlets came to us from a far less than optimal home situation. Denver is a chronic egg layer. All non-invasive treatments for Denver have failed to resolve her egg laying issue. Denver’s avian veterinarian is now recommending a hysterectomy for Denver. The cost of this surgery will be $6,000.00. Denver’s veterinary expense to date has been $2060.15.
We have thus far invested $8,210.00 in the wellness of these birds. We need another $14,700.00 to complete their veterinary procedures. Please find it in your hearts and in your wallets to donate towards the care of these birds. Thank you so much for all of your support!
