Please know that there are many, many birds needing homes. We beg you to please adopt, and don’t shop! We are going to introduce or reintroduce you to some of our longer term residents in this report. All these birds were relinquished to us for a variety of reasons. As you read the descriptions of each bird, you will probably be thinking “why are there all these somewhat negative comments?” Well, we’re trying to be honest and trying to be sure that people understand that parrots are not easy birds. People get parrots for a lot of wrong reasons without doing their homework. When this happens, the birds and the humans suffer, but the birds truly lose. There are so many things to consider .. to name a few ..
Avian veterinary care is sometimes difficult to find and is ALWAYS expensive
Your parrot, depending on the species, may very well outlive you. What then?
Bird respiratory systems are very sensitive. Ready to give up your candles, incense, Teflon cooking pans, plug in air fresheners? And no smoking around the birds!
Birds need a healthy and nutritionally sound diet. You can’t just give a bird a bowl of water and a dish of seeds! It doesn’t matter what kind of parrot from parakeet to macaws and cockatoos. They need a diet appropriate to their species and most entail fresh vegetables, fruit, and pelleted food. It gets a bit pricey, but if you cheap out, your bird will develop life threatening health problems.
Don’t want your furniture, bannisters, doors, baseboards, etc. “customized” by your parrot? Then keep a close eye on the bird or don’t get a parrot!
This list could go on and on, but if we haven’t scared you off yet and you think you can offer any of these birds a home, please email us at adopt@avianunderdogs.org for an adoption application. Once we have your application, one of our adoption coordinators will contact you to take the next steps which will entail meeting the bird or birds you are interested in several times while in their foster home, a home check, and then ultimately an adoption. We can only adopt to residents of Orange County CA or areas very nearby. We do not ship birds and cannot handle the logistics of potential homes that are not in or near Orange County CA.
MIKEY
Mikey is a great talker! He’ll greet you every morning with a “hello” & “good morning” while waving his foot. He’ll ask “what are you doing?” or “is everything okay?” When you leave, he’ll flap his wings and say “bye bye”. Mikey is looking for his FIRST forever home (since being in AURA’s care) with someone who has cockatoo experience that can set firm rules and boundaries for him since he’s a “cuckoo too” after all!
TAI TAI
Tai Tai is a blacked capped conure.
Tai Tai is a diva!! She loves to be the center of attention and doesn’t like to share that attention with anyone or any bird. Tai Tai is a sweetheart and very friendly but can be nippy when she is not given her way or when it’s her bedtime. She loves hanging out in her foster mom’s shirt and supervises while she cleans. Tai Tai is too much of a diva to get her feet dirty so she’ll only supervise!
PUMPKIN
Pumpkin is your stereotypical caique – fun and crazy! He enjoys being around other caiques and will only stick to his own kind. He doesn’t like men and is very anxious around dogs since he’s been attacked twice by dogs! So please, no dogs in the home! He needs an experienced Mom who can set clear, firm rules and boundaries for him. Be aware that he tends to be louder than most caiques!
LINKIN PARK
Linkin Park is about 12 years old. He can be around cats and dogs, but only when supervised for everybody’s safety – especially the 4-legged children since he likes to show everyone that he’s boss. He is learning how to socialize with other caiques. He has trouble accepting birds of other species, MAYBE he can learn. Linkin Park is NOT a beginner bird and will need parronts that are not afraid to tell him no and put him in his place when he becomes a typical caique. He has a strong personality but is also loving and sweet!
JUNIE
Junie is a 5 year old Congo African Grey with special needs, but she doesn’t let that get her down. She loves to talk to herself when no one is around to converse with. She enjoys playing with her toys and showing them who’s the boss. Once Junie feels comfortable with you, she will ask you to scratch her neck. If you do it wrong, she will let you know! Junie is looking for her forever home with someone who can spend their days loving her.
POPPY DO & LANAI
They are both conures – a red factor sun conure and a yellow sided green cheek conure. Both are 7 years old. Poppy and Lanai are VERY FRIENDLY and TAME. They’re the sweetest birds, but of course can have their moments. Poppy loves to be in the limelight, so Poppy can pick on Lanai if she gets in her way. Poppy Do is also Lanai’s support and strength, so they must be adopted together. They have to have separate cages since Poppy likes to have her own space. Both of them mimic sounds and will say a few words.
