2024: Challenges, achievements and the path ahead!

By Victor Castelazo | Project Assistant

Recovering cameras in flooded areas
Recovering cameras in flooded areas

This year has been a true challenge! We faced an intense drought season with record-breaking temperatures, followed by a prolonged rainy season that flooded large parts of the jungle. On top of that, we dealt with two hurricane threats that forced us to take urgent measures to recover and protect our equipment. Despite our efforts, the flooded areas have prevented us from checking all our camera traps, resulting in the loss of at least two cameras and placing us in the dangerous position of crossing crocodile-inhabited territories.

However, these challenges have not stopped us. This year, we’ve managed to capture extraordinary records of the wildlife inhabiting the jungle, including spider monkey families moving together and majestic jaguars walking with their cubs. These moments are a powerful reminder of the immense value of our efforts and the impact of protecting this unique ecosystem.

The support of local communities has been essential in continuing our monitoring and patrol activities. These communities, deeply committed to conservation, carry out regular patrols in protected areas while we provide them with guidance and tools to strengthen their work. These actions are crucial to deterring illegal activities such as poaching and illegal logging, as well as ensuring that the biological corridors connecting key habitats remain intact.

This year, we’ve achieved significant milestones, but our mission is far from over. We must keep working to conserve and protect the jaguar’s habitat. The future of this iconic species and the entire biodiversity surrounding it depends on our efforts. With your support, we can ensure that jaguars have safe spaces to live and thrive for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who has believed in this project and contributed to its success. Today, we invite you to bring more allies to our cause so that, together, we can strengthen this effort to protect jaguars, their prey, and their habitat. The land of the jaguar needs us now more than ever!
