Saving lives at birth: Using IMAM guidelines

Medical Management Infants and Children 6 – 59 Months with Moderate Wasting

Unlike infants and children with SAM, there is no systematic medical management for children admitted with moderate malnutrition (MAM). These guidelines have been drafted to save the lives of the children in Uganda.
Based on clinical indication, children 6-59 months with MAM were admitted to the hospital. Stable MAM infants and children without danger signs, medical, feeding, and psychosocial problems needing admission are managed as outpatients
Infants and children identified on admission or even discovered during a child’s inpatient admission that the child has MAM, this opportunity was optimized to carry out a comprehensive assessment and deliver treatment (wherever possible) for the medical and psychosocial problems that might have led to or exacerbated the current episode of MAM.
Management of identified co-morbidity (e.g. ART regime for HIV, anti-TB drug regime, etc.) followed the same national clinical protocols for the management of non-malnourished children in the usual regular system.
