3rd report on Provision of Scholarships

By Bonnie Mendes | Project Leader

Dear Friends. Thank you for your donations and support. So far SHD has managed to raise $16,460 to help intelligent but needy students. Society for Human Development has provided the scholarships on two levels. 1. A Reach out to the poor villages in Toba Tek Singh, where some families are sending their kids to school for the first time. SHD has helped these poor families to pay their admission fee, to get the books, stationary and uniform for the year. So far 57 children (aged 3-9 years and belonging to the extremely poor families) have been supported financially and now all children are going to the neaest schools regularly. SHD is also facilitating them in transportation as well. Some children from an extremely poor background from Toba Tek Singh have been enrolled in the nearest Missionary School with the support of SHD. The children are very much excited about the school. During this quarter, SHD has targeted to support the poor children whose parent’s works at the brick kilns. Brick kiln owners usually exploit these workers by not paying them the wages according to the government notified rate. That’s why majority of the workers live below poverty line and lack basic facilities like safe drinking water, electricity, and bathrooms. Their children have no financial resources to continue their education. Society for Human Development always tries to empower the marginalized communities. This time SHD is trying to help the poor students to help them get education. Society for Human Development has helped the 57 students on monthly basis and covered their school and travel expenses. The cost for each kids education Rs: 1500 per month. 2. Scholarships to 28 students who received good grade were given to help them get enrolled in Undergraduate courses . These scholarships have been given in Toba and Jhang districts. Maria (A 4 year old girl ) after receiving support from SHD, is very happy. Her parents works at the brick kiln and before admitting her to school , they used to take her to work at the brick kiln. They wanted to put her in school but had no resources. Now they are happy to see their daughter going to school. After the school the kids studies and play together. They thanked SHD for the support. The Scholarship program for the intelligent but needed students has proven to be a success. Many students have found hope of continuing their education, through this project. We would like to request all our donors and supporters to keep supporting our cause .
