Programme Sekoly: Fanaka (The bench building project), aims to tackle a serious barrier to development: access to quality education. To achieve this goal, SEED will construct 1307 classroom benches to be distributed across 17 schools in rural Anosy region, as well as provide repairs to their existing broken classroom furniture. This will provide comfortable learning environment for more than 5445 students. SEED will also offset the carbon footprint of the project through planting trees.
It has been well established that household education levels are linked to rates of poverty. In Madagascar, only 35% of children complete a primary level of education, and in the country's southeast Anosy region half of 6-10-year old's have never attended school. SEED has conducted needs assessments at 17 schools in Taolagnaro district of the Anosy region, and here students often study on the floor or share two-person benches between three or four students.
SEED aims to address these challenges by conducting a seven-month desk-bench construction project at 17 schools across Taolagnaro distric (rural Anosy), thereby enabling over 5445 students to gain an education in a comfortable and dignified environment that is conducive for learning. SEED has already secured $84000. We have a matching fund from a mystery donor, of which $6300 remains to be matched. This leaves us with an equivalent gap of $11500 to fill.
This construction will improve the existing learning environment for 5445 students across the target schools as the provision of new, alongside existing furniture, will ensure that every student has their own space at a two-person desk bench. This will allow students to sit comfortably, and maintain focus, and enable more students to enroll in and successfully complete school. Just $30 could provide a seat for a student! Together we can help transform a child's future.
