With just a 54% school enrollment rate in Anosy Madagascar, a variety of obstacles stand in the way of children’s education. One of these obstacles is lack of comfortable seating for students. Based on a need’s assessment conducted by SEED Madagascar (SEED), students often have to study on the floor or share two-person benches between three or four students. This challenge is amplified in larger classrooms of up to 90 students.
These conditions result in a subpar learning environment where students are unfocused and have difficulties writing, hampering the overall quality of education. By expanding student seating, classrooms will experience increased capacity and comfort, enabling more children to enroll in and complete school.
Project Fanaka (SEED’s Bench building project) aims to tackle the issue of accessing quality education by repairing broken desk benches and providing new ones to schools in Fort Dauphin. By the project’s completion, 15 schools will receive support, impacting 11,093 students.
So far, SEED has delivered 92 desk benches to Pole Upper-Secondary School and 128 desk benches to Tanambao Lower Secondary School, totaling 220 constructed benches. This progress is just half of SEED’s plans and will be followed by constructing 290 more two-person benches. Additionally, SEED has repaired 36 benches at Pole Upper-Secondary School. SEED plans to repair 371 more desks across the 15 schools in Fort Dauphin. With the new benches, schools can foster a conducive learning environment where students feel comfortable and dignified.
Once the benches have been repaired, SEED plans to offset its carbon footprint by creating a community-managed tree planting site.
As you can see, a lot of work has been done to enhance student well-being and promote educational attainment, but there is still much to be done. Follow along to receive ongoing updates, and as always, SEED thanks you for your continued support and dedication to students in need.
