Schools: Educating underserved girls in Pakistan

We are pleased to share that after battling a second wave of Covid-19, our schools have reopened after almost 1.5 months under the Government directives. Children are back in their classrooms resuming normal routine that allows them to complete their studies and continue to the next level. We are taking extra care to ensure the safety of our students and staff with a strong emphasis on good personal hygiene, health- consciousness and encouraging physical activities and integrating health promotion materials into the school curriculum.

The education sector has faced huge loss during the last 9 months. With closure of schools on November 26, 2020, our teachers were once again back to their routine on delivering books and lessons to the children confined to their homes. It has been tough for the parents as they struggled with their children at home during this period. They express their utmost appreciation of the role of teachers in the lives and well-being of their children

Girls are often unduly impacted in crises like Covid-19. Given the inequities faced by families in the neighborhoods where they live, the pandemic has posed a great challenge to the continuance of education.  Increased poverty puts them at a greater risk of early marriage and increased responsibilities, preventing them from returning to school. Our teachers, committed in their mission to educate and empower girls, are actively engaging with parents of our students, to keep every girl in school.

COVID-19 has posed a great challenge to the continuance of education during this pandemic.  Since most of the children lack reliable electricity at home, let alone internet or laptops, our teachers managed with their commitment to their students and their families.  During the day, they have been going door to door where their students live, bringing lessons, books, and words of encouragement, supporting vulnerable populations from a six-foot distance.

 After the ease in lockdown, the government announced that all the schools across the country will reopen in phases from Sept. 15, ending a six-month closure propelled by the pandemic.

In the first phases, we welcomed our Grade 9 &10. Students in grade six to eight returned to school on Sept. 23, while students in nursery to grade five were back to school on Sept. 30. Our students are so happy to be back and so are we!

We have set up all precautionary measures against the spread of the corona virus, strictly following the SOPs. Other than providing face masks and sanitizers, non contact infrared thermometers are used to take temperatures. To ensure social distancing and in an attempt to control the spread of virus, we are running the schools in two shifts.

Enthusiastically, the students celebrated World Teachers' Day with the theme Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”. The love and dedication these teachers have shown their students and their families despite all odds and the risks of doing so, will always be a reason to be proud of their teachers
