The problem of cancer care in Nigeria is multi-layered. St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation is focused on the treatment aspect where the need is greatest. Patients often wait months or even years before they can start treatment. Some die waiting! A shortage of treatment centres and a lack of optimal care are at the core of ineffective therapy. Chemotherapy drugs are often given with no infusion pump to regulate the rate of these toxic drugs, risking severe and sometimes fatal side effects.
In lieu of this, we have been able to raise the sum of $6,809 of $10,000. This is a great feat since the inception of our S.C.I.P.S Initiative through the GlobalGiving platform and we would like to thank all our donors so far.
However, with the challenge of an acute shortage of brachytherapy units in Nigeria, approximately 98% short of Nigeria's World Health Organization recommendation. St Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation initiated a project that'll further expand our reach to millions of Nigerians as both beneficiaries and benefactors. This will have a long-term impact and reduce the mortality of individuals with cervical cancer. Additionally, this project aligns with the WHO's SDGs #3 directly and Indirectly with the other 16 goals.
We will be expanding the project to incorporate the OMIFAC INITIATIVE.
OMIFAC is an acronym for One Million Individuals Fighting Against cancer.
It is an initiative organized by St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation targeted at having one million people donate NGN1,000 monthly for the next 12 months (1 year) to build a brachytherapy Unit in Surulere, Lagos State and a Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Center in a centralised location in Nigeria. For this initiative, people will donate a little amount of money on a monthly basis for a year, and the money will be used to construct a brachytherapy unit and comprehensive cancer centre. We hope to raise funds and publicise the Initiative to Individuals and communities all over the world including corporate bodies.
We sincerely hope you'll be a part of this project and also bring friends and family on board. Thank you
