Our self-defence courses in Nagpur support girls and young women to tackle violent or precarious situations with strength and self-defence skills. Here, they learn simple tricks and moves to respond proactively to gender based violence. Girls in India are stalked, 'eve-teased', groped, or face other forms of violence on a daily basis. We train more than 1000 young girls per year so that they gain self-confidence and skills to counter harassment and abuse.
Every 62 minutes a woman is murdered in India. Women and girls face physical, sexual and emotional violence in private and public spaces. As per sources, 77% of women who have experienced sexual or physical violence never tell anyone due to a culture of shame surrounding this issue. Despite some progressive changes in legislation, women still suffer from gender based violence. Hence, strengthening self-confidence and practical self-defence skills of girls is a crucial part of this project.
Prabodhini projects offers training in order to mould young girls and women into being brave and assertive. The training will not only assist these students in becoming aware of their surroundings, but increase their self-confidence and sense of safety in difficult circumstances. Such skills will help women to generate a sense of autonomy and assert that their lives and bodies are their own. The most effective tricks and kicks to ward off attackers can be vital in emergency situations.
The project is a tiny step towards equipping girls to not tolerate any unfair treatment. This project in a medium sized city like Nagpur and the satellite towns surrounding it can trigger a ripple effect of positive change in mindsets and behaviours regarding violence against women. The core agenda of this project is to empower girls to freely develop their potential. Our aim is to make sure that every women & girl can walk fearlessly in daily life and is able to protect herself.
