Today, we would like to share experiences of young girls and women who were able to prevent violence engulfing their lives at home, in school, on the road, in bus or in a market. The self-defence course has instilled in them the confidence and fearlessness to speak out against violence. They believe that they can help other women and girls to stand up for themselves and their rights.
A new ray of Hope for Amrapali
Amrapali was sexually harassed by a close relative. This made her feel increasingly insecure; she became depressed and anxious and finally gave up on pursuing her education. Through the self-defense course, she learned many things that strengthened her self-confidence. Prabhodhini's trainers were the first with whom she finally shared her experience of being sexually harassed. After nine months, she felt as if she was relieved of a burden. Today she is confident and able to stand up to attacks. She feels strong and is motivated to complete her education.
Pledge to be safe
Warsha and Anjali have ensured their own safety as well as stood up for others who found themselves in precarious situations. To be able to defend oneself, takes a lot of courage and skills. Anjali retaliated against unwarranted advances by her neighbour who sexually harassed her in her own house. Warsha on the other hand, stood up against the bus driver whose brash driving style put everyone’s safety on the bus at risk. The conversation techniques that they learnt at the self-defence training helped them navigate through situations such as those mentioned above. They have pledged to stand up for their dignity and safety.
We salute these young girls and women for their courage.
Thank you for supporting their journey towards self-determination and freedom.
Best Regards,
Karuna Deutschland Team
