As the world locked down, violence surged behind shut doors. The women and girls have reached out to us talking about their despair in these difficult times. We tried to reach them via phone calls to revise the training and techniques with them so that they can use these when they face a difficult situation. We are trying to do the best we can to ensure that the girls and women do not feel isolated and can gather the courage and strength to protect themselves against any adversities.
In this regard, we would like to inform you about the status of our self-defence project and how it has been impacted by the COVID-19 situation in India. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown we were forced to temporarily suspend our self-defence training programs. We had to take the necessary measures and focus on keeping our volunteers and staff as well as the girls safe. Instead, our staff members diverted all their resources and energy to distribute essential materials such as food and hygiene materials to the families that were in dire need and were going through extreme difficulties during the lockdown.
We are trying to utilize other online resources and get in touch with girls and women. For example, in June we conducted a “Prevention of Child Abuse" training by collaborating with Arpan (an organization which has been working in this field since 2007). 16 people participated in this online session. The objective of this training was to spread awareness regarding child abuse and harassment amidst parents.
We know that this situation has deeply impacted everyone’s lives. Like many of you, we are committed to support the fight against COVID-19 and we can only achieve it with your support. July 15th is Bonus Day! Donations from $100 and up to $1,000 will be matched from GlobalGiving funds. The higher the donation, the higher the match! We really look forward to your contribution.
Thank you for being there and for believing in us and our project. Please do share our project with your friends and family.
Stay safe and healthy.
Best Regards,
Karuna Deutschland Team
