QUALITY EDUCATION FOR DEPRIVED KIDS IN VENEZUELA

   Mi nombre es Yris, estoy casada, tengo tres hijos y me desempeño como trabajadora  social  en la Escuela Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga desde hace siete años.

   Estoy a cargo del departamento del Servicio Social del Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga, cuya misión es brindar formación integral de absoluta calidad a nuestros pequeños, y también ser multiplicadores de bienestar en toda la comunidad del Barrio 24 de Marzo. Día a día, trabajo en numerosos casos para rescatar a niños en situación de riesgo social. Son casos que van más allá de nuestros muros.

   Uno de ellos inició el año pasado y se trata de una familia numerosa que vive en la misma calle de la escuela. Ocho niños pequeños están a cargo de sus padres que no pueden asegurarles los cuidados básicos. Bañarse, cepillarse los dientes, vestirse, tomar el desayuno, el almuerzo, la cena… incluso asistir a una escuela, significa todo un lujo para esta familia petareña. El Servicio Social del Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga, decidió apoyarlos para asegurar su bienestar integral.

   Hoy en día, estos pequeños tienen la esperanza de crecer sanos y cuidados. Acuden a nuestra escuela para recibir alimentación y atención médica. También su madre es beneficiaria de  nuestros programas de educación y salud; luego de dar a luz a su octavo hijo, accedió a recibir orientación en planificación familiar, así como atención ginecológica y médica en general. Sólo la educación y la guía constante, nos permite asegurar mejoras en la calidad de vida de esta familia.

   Mi inicio en la escuela Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga fue muy interesante. Trabajaba para una ONG de protección infantil y familiar realizando, entre otras actividades, el seguimiento a escuelas de las comunidades de Petare. Al conocer a la Madre María Luisa y al proyecto que tenía en mente me sentí atraída de inmediato; por eso cuando me pidió que la ayudara con diez estudiantes que debían concursar para Becas Escolares, me fue imposible negarme.

   Desde entonces he aplicado todas mis estrategias de trabajo en la escuela y ha sido una experiencia más que enriquecedora. Quiero orientar y ayudar a cada uno de los estudiantes, a sus familias y a toda la comunidad.

   Es así como el Departamento de Servicio Social de la Escuela Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga trabaja para formar líderes positivos desde la educación y la formación en valores. También organiza una “Escuela de Padres” con el fin de brindar un espacio físico y psicológico para apoyar y capacitar a los padres o representantes. La finalidad es que obtengan conocimientos sobre aspectos psicopedagógicos y ambientales y compartan con nosotros vivencias que faciliten el fortalecimiento de las relaciones familiares.

   Son numerosos los casos en los que hemos buscado hogares sustitutos para niños cuyos padres no pueden ocuparse de ellos. Incluso les ayudamos a gestionar sus documentos de identificación. Abordamos todas las situaciones de riesgo en las que los derechos de los niños puedan ser vulnerados.

   Cuando la gente me pregunta cómo llegué al Jenaro Aguirre, siempre digo:  Por providencia de Dios”.

   La escuela en la comunidad del 24 de Marzo es un aliciente dentro de tantas necesidades. Me siento cada día más comprometida  con lo  que  hago y más aún con mi escuela.

   My name is Yris, I’m married with three children and I’ve been a social worker at the Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga School for the past seven years.

   I am in charge of the Social Services Department at Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga. Our mission at the department is to offer a well-rounded and high quality education for the children as well as serving as multipliers of well-being among the community of Barrio 24 de Marzo. In my day to day I work on many cases to rescue at-risk children. These are cases that go beyond the Jenaro’s walls. 

   One of the cases we received last year involves a large family living in the same street as the School. They are eight small children whose parents cannot ensure them their basic needs, such as clothes, food, water for baths or washing their teeth, even going to school is considered a luxury to this family from Petare. The department of social services at Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga decided to take the case to ensure their overall welfare.

    Nowadays, these little ones are growing up healthy and taken care of. They attend our School where they receive daily meals and medical attention. Their mother also benefits from our health and education programs. After the birth of her eighth child, she agreed to receive orientation on planned parenthood, as well as gynecological and basic medical attention.  Through education and constant guidance, we have been able to improve this family’s quality of life. 

   The story of how I started at the Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga School is very interesting. I was working at an NGO for family and children’s protection at the time, assessing schools in the Petare Community. When I met Madre María Luisa and learned about her projects, I was immediately drawn to it all. When she asked for my help on the cases of ten children who were applying for scholarships, it was impossible for me to say no.

   Since then I’ve applied all my past work experience and strategies at the School and it has been a more than gratifying experience. My desire is to guide and help each and every one of the students, their families and the whole community.

   This is how the Department of Social Services of the Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga works towards shaping positive leaders from an education based on values. The department also organizes a “School for Parents” which provides a space, both physical and psychological to bring support and training for parents and caregivers, helping them achieve skills in environmental and educational psychology and having them share with us their life experiences in order to help them strengthen their family relationships.

   There are many cases in which we have managed to find substitute homes for children whose parents are not able to take care of them. We even help with the legal paperwork. We handle risky situations where the children’s rights might be in jeopardy.

   When people ask me how I arrived at the Jenaro Aguirre, I always answer: “By God’s Providence”.

   This school is a great incentive for the community of 24 de Marzo in the midst of so much need. I feel more committed to my work and to the School every single day.
