NISHA, THE HERO OF MAHIPALPUR
“Earlier, whenever I needed to go outside home, I used to take my younger brother along. There was a fear about eve-teasing and safety. But now, I am aware of POCSO Act which instilled confidence in me to deal with any adverse situations. I have memorized the child and women helpline numbers to safeguard ourselves”. – Nisha, the graduate of Sukarya’s 2021 Gender Equality Program.
Nisha, 15, the resident of Mahipalpur Urban Slums in Delhi, became a hero for the entire slum community when she rescued one of her friends from being sexually abused by a vegetable street vendor living nearby. The victim was too scared to speak about the sexual advances made by the man to her parents but shared it with Nisha. Nisha immediately talked to her mother, and they called the helpline #1098, and the police arrested the accused. This episode made Nisha more confident and a strong advocate for gender rights and equality.
Nisha aspires to study and acquire vocational skills to ensure economic support to the family. Initially, Nisha’s father resisted her enrolment into Sukarya’s adolescent program, saying that it was against their culture to promote and equate girls with boys and provide freedom to them. Today, he feels proud of his daughter.
