End of Year Exams and New Year Begins

The end of last year was a busy time for Kibera Mpira Mtaani (KiMMta). This is the time of year when students at the end of their primary school education sit their final exams. The KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) results determine if students will be offered a place in secondary school and what level of school (National, Provisional, District) they are invited to join.

In 2012, KiMMta had sixty candidates for KCPE. This is where the after-school tuition plays a vital role as students are supported in their studies and have access to the all-important text books that can help them. With the extra tuition, students have a better chance of performing well and getting offered places at secondary schools than those who rely on the informal education offered in non-government schools.

Last year, KiMMta had around 200 students in schools throughout the country with about 150 of these being at boarding schools. 25 of their students sat their final secondary school exams (KCSE) last year and are awaiting their results along with the 60 KCPE students.

The ECD (Early Childhood Development) centre set up in the last term of 2012 is doing well. Sixty students are enrolled and have returned after their Christmas break. In 2013, the committee in charge of this project is looking to set up one or two income generating activities to make the programme sustainable in the future.

Launching a New Education Programme

Launch of ECD Centre

Over the last few months, the team at Kibera Mpira Mtaani has been working hard to set up a new education programme. From the 1st October, their resource centre which is currently used for after-school tuition will be used as an Early Childhood Development Centre during the day. A group of sixty young children will take their places in the Baby Class, Nursery Class and Pre-Unit Class of the new school. As KiMMta's Chairman, Vincent Kegode, explained to the students' parents, the intention of the centre is "to give children a good foundation for when they start in government primary schools". Vincent also stressed that the centre must deliver quality education to the children who are enrolled and their progress in primary school will be followed up through KiMMta's after-school tuition programme which currently supports over four hundred children on a daily basis.

The opening of the centre has been made possible thanks to a grant from a foundation in the UK which will support the programme for two years. Plans are already underway to introduce income generating activities which will ensure the programme remains sustainable. Vincent made sure that parents attending today's meeting were aware that the community is also expected to contribute to the sustainability of the centre with each student paying a small fee of 300ksh (2.30, $3.50) per month. As well as paying for teachers and providing a school uniform for each student, the grant will allow a feeding programme to be put in place whereby students will receive a cup of porridge at morning break and a hot lunch every day during term time. Vincent said "we thank Vision Africa for working with us on this". Vision Africa Field Director, Deborah Kimathi, congratulated Vincent and his team at KiMMta on setting up the ECD centre. She said "We are very excited about this new programme and we want the ECD centre to be a success. Only one thing will make it a success and that is teamwork.

Taking Steps Towards Sustainability

As we celebrate Vision Africa's tenth anniversary, we have set a challenge to all our project leaders including those at Kibera Mpira Mtaani. By December 2013 our projects should be raising 30% of their budgets through income generating activities with a view to increasing that to 50% by 2015.

Kibera Mpira Mtaani has risen to the challenge. As their first interest was initially football, they have subscribed to satellite television and broadcast football matches to the residents of Kibera for a small fee. Between the English Premier League and European Championships there are lots of matches to be shown. The charges vary depending on the teams playing with the highest fees for matches such as Manchester Utd vs. Arsenal. This business has recently expanded with bottled sodas being sold to those watching the matches.

Another Income Generating Activity that Kibera Mpira Mtaani has started is the hire of tents and chairs. These can be hired for a fee for events such as weddings, church services or football tournaments. This business also has potential to grow through the addition of a PA system.

By running these businesses, Kibera Mpira Mtaani is able to pay for the rent of a room that can be used for children to study in. They can also pay something to the volunteer teachers who tutor students in the after-school program and can buy paraffin for the lamps that are used when there is no electricity.

Three members of the team from Kibera Mpira Mtaani attended a workshop last week which gave them skills and knowledge to develop their Income Generating Activities to the next level.

These are the first steps towards a more sustainable future for Kibera Mpira Mtaani as they continue to work with over 300 children on a daily basis.
