This project seeks to empower women who are traditionally excluded (socially, economically and politically) from Chitwan, Makwanpur and Sarlahi districts. WPD will institutionalize women affinity groups through economic empowerment and awareness as well as advocacy programs. Finally, SEWAM intends to improve living conditions of these women by increasing their capacity and involving them into collaborative income generating activities and community development programs.
Inequality between men and women as well as gender discrimination prevails at all levels of the society. Women remain excluded economically, socially, and politically; and those in rural areas are even more marginalized and remain poor, with the majority of them engaged in informal, subsistence and domestic labor. Rural women do not have access to economic opportunities; nor do they have access to information for initiating income generation activities or employment opportunities.
This project will economically and socially empower women while using a human-rights based approach enabling them to actively participate and get involved at all levels of their community from household to the municipal level. SEWAM will create women's groups comprising of 25-30 women where one woman from one family becomes a member. The groups will be formed using an inclusive approach. Each group will receive training in Civic Education and Leadership and Self Help Group Management.
The learning gained by Women Affinity Groups (WAG) during the implementation of the program will be continued through these village based institutionalized structures. The lessons learned will also help other WAGs and stakeholders, develop new program plans for strengthening the socioeconomic transformation process and community development in the target communities of Nepal. Finally, awareness and advocacy are key approaches of the project; enabling women to voice their needs.
