Lighting the Way: Kukula Solar's Transformational Impact in Eastern Province

By Francis Mbewe | Project Leader

In the rural communities of Eastern Province, darkness used to descend with the sunset, limiting opportunities and posing safety risks. But since Kukula Solar distributed solar lanterns, lives have been transformed.
Masiye's Story
Masiye, a 45-year-old farmer from Chipata District, no longer relies on expensive and hazardous candles. With her solar lantern, she can now tend to her vegetable garden after dark, increasing her harvest and income.
"I can now work beyond sunset, and my children can study without struggling to see. Our lives have truly changed," Esther exclaimed.
Rodah's Story
Rodah, a 28-year-old teacher from Katete District, uses her solar lantern to conduct evening classes for students struggling in school.
"The solar lantern has enabled me to provide extra support to my students, and their grades have improved significantly," Rodah said.
Tipezenji's Story
Tipezenji, a 35-year-old entrepreneur from Lundazi District, operates a small shop lit by solar lanterns. Her business now stays open longer, attracting more customers.
"Kukula Solar's lanterns have increased my sales and allowed me to support my family more comfortably," Tipezenji noted.
The Impact
To date, Kukula Solar has distributed 4,200 solar lanterns across 5 Districts in Eastern Province, benefiting:
  • Over 1,400 households with reliable lighting
  • 5,600 students with improved study conditions
  • 420 entrepreneurs with extended business hours
These solar lanterns have become beacons of hope, empowering individuals and communities to break free from darkness and unlock their full potential.
Join Kukula Solar in illuminating more lives. Together, we can create a brighter future for rural communities.
