Roadtrip in June 2023: Inspiration Workshops

By Belen Sevilla Morillo | Project and Community Gardener

Taller de Inspiracion en El Bongal
Taller de Inspiracion en El Bongal

Are we already halfway through the year?

We can't believe how fast the hands of the clock are moving. We have so much to tell! We cannot be more grateful to our entire community and, above all, to your constant help. We cannot do everything we do without you... will I be able to convey to you all the intensity of what we are living?

We set out to visit, for example, the Community of El Bongal (Montes de María, going up Cerro de Maco) very early in the morning... the idea is to be in the community before 8:00 to organize everything .

Objective: Inspiration Workshop, the event where the SOLE space is inaugurated and the Ambassadors are officially named, giving them their SOLE Colombia Kit, to then debut leading a SOLE with their community. The SOLE Colombia Kits for the new Ambassadors include this year a Rural Kit with computers and a connectivity device customized to the needs of each community. We have also drawn up agreements for the donation and use of the equipment, others to formalize the commitment with the institutions responsible for the spaces that will house the SOLEs. All that, to the backpack. In addition, sheets, pens, erasers, our computers, water, collection accounts for the people who provide us with snacks, lunches, transportation. Excitement, hope to share this workshop that we have designed with so much love. Nerve, although tempered because we need them to solve unforeseen events all the time.

Getting to El Bongal means going "hanging" from the handles in a Willys jeep (yes, those that appear in the movies that have no windows and that can be filled with any number of things), along an unpaved track, full of dirt, for about an hour. When it has rained, the earth turns to mud. In any of those versions, it gets into the eyes and even under the clothes. For some of the people who come to the session, it also means walking for an hour or coming by motorcycle for 20 minutes... along the same or similar road.

Suffocating heat, sunbathing. A snake sneaks into the room where we are going to work. Once outside, part of the team is in charge of the Workshop and another part goes to Arroyo de María, a nearby community where we think we could install another SOLE, but we have to test first if the connectivity device can be installed.

The Inspiration Workshop has three parts, more or less. The first, how to do SOLE? The second, how does the Internet work? The third, how to manage common resources? After lunch. The heat is intense throughout the day and the energy of the people fluctuates from lethargy to enthusiasm. Our suitcase is full of ants and we don't know how to get them out.

The part of the team that tested the connectivity in the nearby town appears again, confirming that we managed to connect the Internet up there! This means that people will not have to travel down that road that I was telling you about to be able to solve their Big Questions.

The connection in El Bongal has 100K... that is, almost nothing. The Ambassadors have summoned their community and people are beginning to arrive to do SOLE. They pose their Big Question, choose the Captain and prepare to connect the equipment to the very poor signal to connect with "La Abuelita" who until now do not know very well what she does, or who she is... and TACHAAAAAAN: someone on the other side APPEARS! Someone from another side of the world wants to know what they are going to investigate. Someone on the other end tells them who she is and asks who they are, and what they're doing, and what they're investigating. And they laugh together. It is the emotion to know that you are important to someone who does not even know you.

Some of the people who connect with a Granny in a SOLE session have never turned on a computer. Some do not know how to read and write. The magic of the internet allows them to talk to someone in Arizona, in Bogotá, in Spain, in Guatemala, in Cartagena, in El Piñón - Magdalena, in the Netherlands... and they can also learn about something that interests everyone! WE CONNECT, to dry and with everything that that word brings with it.

Thank you dear Godmothers

Algunas no saben leer y escribir.

Gracias queridas Madrinas
