Spay and Neuters on Dogs/Cats in Bucharest

Animal Spay and Neuter International works with many people, shelters and organisations with anything from ten to three hundred dogs and cats at each place. Most cannot afford to spay and neuter their animals which is when we step in to help. ASNI works with up to 50 shelters, rescues, organisations and people. Most have accumulated their dogs from the streets and fields as strays.

Often overwhelmed with dogs and puppies, it is important that ASNI is able to help and support local shelters, people and organisations. One female dog can reproduce (Potentially) 67,000 puppies in her lifetime, female has puppies, her puppies have puppies and so on. With cats the numbers can run into the millions!

It is difficult to ascertain exactly how many strays are on the streets around Bucharest and in Romania per se as no statistics exist at this time to this end. Also recording the number of stray animals is difficult to do as dogs that actually have a home may roam during the day whilst the owners are working. However, over the past almost 20 years Romania Animal Rescue(our sister charity) and Animal Spay and Neuter International have spayed and neutered almost 100,000 animals in that time.

Why do we Spay and Neuter?

The Physical benefits- female intact dogs suffer from pyometra, cancer of the mammary glands and ovaries and sexually transmitted venereal tumours as well as the impact on their bodies from multiply pregnancies. Males suffer from prostate and testicular cancer and as well as venereal tumours.

Social Benefits – males are less likely to roam looking for a mate and less likely to fight other male dogs because of the reduction in Testosterone. Reduction of animals on the streets is beneficial for numerous reasons including the likelihood of broken bones from accidents with traffic, starvation, diseases such as parvovirus and distemper.

Environmental benefits – periodically dogs are rounded up by the council and taken to the public shelters where parvovirus and distemper is rife, and pregnancies can flourish unmanaged. Dogs fight each other constantly and are deliberately starved to death as a way of managing the population in the shelter.

All these situations can be avoided by a very simple operation for just $25, rescuing dogs and cats is not enough, Animal Spay and Neuter International treats the problem at its source by stopping the suffering at its very roots by spaying and neutering as many animals as possible.
