This is a momentus update...
In 2019 we embarked on a two-year plan to support Percy Davies and Kirunguru Special Schools to become totally self-reliant. Raising Futures, with your support, had been supporting the schools with provision of educational and therapy materials, transport costs for physiotherapists, and subsidising the Government feeding programme through provision of funds for a substantial breakfast, lunch and two snacks a day for 145 children each year.
We were incredibly lucky to recieve a pump-priming grant of £25,000 to provide both schools with a final significant investment to improve facilities and establish income generating activities for self-reliance. We worked closely with both schools to create business plans for income generation activities that would allow them to become totally independennt. Both schools opted for the establishment of School Business Farms that would provide food for the children and surplus to be sold to generate income.
We are thrilled to announce that as of last month, the School Business Farms are now fully operational and both schools are now fully self-reliant! Our financial support is no longer required and both schools are able to supplement their Government funded feeding programmes with nutritious, high calorie foods such as tomatoes, oranges, mangoes and beans. Not only this, but both schools are able to generate additional income to contribute to other costs such as educational materials and building repairs. Both schools have received capital investment for greenhouses, saplings, seeds, fertilizers and farming equipment and have received training from local agronomists. Teachers and other school staff are now trained in crop rotation and other basic farming skills to enable them to fully manage the farms going forward.
This is a huge milestone for Percy Davies and Kirunguru Schools, over a decade in the making. Teachers, school Governors, parents and the wider community have rallied together to get to this point and are so proud of what they have ahieved, and rightly so. They could not have done this without your support throughout the duration of this project - thank you so much.
With you, we have done what all charities set out to do - handover a project to the local community, 100% sustainable and self-reliant.
We will be making this project as 'Funded' at the end of 2021 to allow us to move to our next challenge, our Seed of Hope vocational training programme for vulnerable young people age 14-25. We'd love you to stick by us as we continue our journey towards more sustainable, long-lasting change in the communities we work with so please take a look at our other projects on GlobalGiving to see if there is one that you may like to support when this one closes in a few months.
Signing off with gratitude and pride,
Mary, Florence, Vic and Kirsty at Raising Futures Kenya
