THE REPORT ON THE SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP HELD FOR SUPPORTING DIABETIC CHILDREN.
INTRODUCTION
Wellness for Greatness Kenya managed to raise $1,301 of $20,000 goal. The challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down our outreach programs due to school closure and minimal movements. We also through it wise to keep our beneficiaries healthy and safe because of the underlying condition. We therefore continue to fundraise to reach our targeted goal so as to have an impact in the program.
The first stage we organized an online training workshop on the subject matter where we engaged the beneficiaries to discuss the challenges they are facing during this pandemic. The following topics were discussed:
- Importance of engaging in physical activity
- Healthy diets
- The challenges of keeping safe during covid-19
- Mental Health
- Obesity
It was a two day training where we had 30 participants, the facilitation was done by Wellness for Greatness Kenya staff and invited medical practitioners.
MINISTRY OF EDUCATION CALL FOR SUBMISSION OF MEMORANDA
The Ministry of Education constituted the National COVID-19 Education Response Committee to explore the best possible response strategies for the basic education sub-sector. The Committee’s Terms of Reference are to:
- Advise the Cabinet Secretary on the reopening of Basic Education institutions (Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary Schools, Teacher Training Colleges and Adult Education Institutions).
- Review and reorganise the school calendar as part of the COVID-19 post recovery strategy.
- Advise the Cabinet Secretary on ways of on-boarding students/pupils when the schools re-open.
- Document all COVID-19 related matters, lessons learnt and recommendations for future preparedness.
- Advise the Cabinet Secretary on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the demand for education by poor households and suggest mitigation measures.
- Advise the Cabinet Secretary on the Health and Safety measures to be put in place for the pupils/students, teachers and entire school community.
- Identify institutions that may have been adversely affected by COVID-19 and advise on mitigation and recovery measures.
- Submit regular reports to the Cabinet Secretary on the progress of implementation of COVID-19 related programs.
- Any other related duty that may be assigned by the Cabinet Secretary.
Wellness for Greatness Kenya submitted a memorandum to the committee its recommendations. We recommended that Learners and teachers with underlying medical conditions to be given special attention in everything. Learners who have underlying medical conditions to be facilitated with reading materials/resources and customized class sessions. Teachers above the age of 58 and those with underlying medical conditions can be required to work remotely. Other recommendations :
a) Nutrition Promotion / Healthy Diets
b) Wellness/Health Councils- School Emergency Response Unit
c) WASH Fit for School- Three Star Approach
d) The EduAfya Comprehensive Medical Cover
e) Create, and Support diabetes support groups in Schools
f) Class Intervals / Staggering
CHALLENGES
The main challenge to the partial implementation of the program can be attributed to insufficient funds and the slow realization of our budget goal.
OPPORTUNITIES
- We continue to find sponsors to support the program
- Voluntary members willing to work
- Collaboration with government
- With schools opened our outreach strategy can realized effectively.
CONCLUSION AND APPEAL
We shall hold our 2nd sensitization workshop in February. Through the sensitization workshop we shall reach out to the beneficiaries directly through their schools and guardians.
We request well wishers to continue supporting the project so that we may realise our $20,000 goal, this will enable us to implement the project efficiently and effectively.
