UP Zambia Social Support Team recently conducted their 5th Mentorship Programme for teens at the Lusaka Remand Correctional Facility. The primary objective of this initiative was to address the challenges faced by children in conflict with the law while in detention. By providing structured mentorship, we aimed to equip these children with essential skills for survival in detention facilities and aid their reintegration into society.
The project spanned 5 weeks and consisted of 5 comprehensive sessions. These sessions covered a range of crucial topics, including assessments, personal hygiene, sexual violence, substance abuse.
Activities were conducted in both group and individual settings and included counselling, sports, and art. These methods were chosen to provide a holistic approach to rehabilitation and skill-building.
During the 5 week mentorship programme, several positive changes were noted:
Improved Attitudes: The children displayed a marked improvement in their attitudes towards counselling. Over time, they became more committed and participated voluntarily in the sessions without needing to be mandated.
Behavioural Changes: Prison officers reported noticeable improvements in the children's general behaviour and their attitudes towards sexual violence.
Successful Programming: Our combination of group and individual counselling, along with sport and art activities, proved extremely successful in engaging the children and facilitating their rehabilitation.
Introduction of Art Lessons: This programme marked the first instance of art lessons being conducted at the Lusaka Remand Correctional Facility. The children and prison officers alike found this to be beneficial. Many children discovered a passion for art, and the lessons provided a therapeutic outlet for self-expression, aiding in their rehabilitation process.
The 5th Mentorship Programme at the Lusaka Remand Correctional Facility has been a significant success, yielding positive behavioural changes and providing essential skills to the children in detention. This achievement would not have been possible without your continued financial support. Your invaluable contributions have empowered us to extend our assistance to children in detention, helping them access vital resources and opportunities for personal growth and rehabilitation.
Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to this cause.
