Thank you for your generous financial support and additional funding for previous mentorship programs for children in communities and correctional facilities. In May 2024, UP Zambia’s Social Support Team recently piloted the fourth mentorship program, reaching 130 children at Lusaka Remand Correctional Facility. This program provided these children with essential coping and reintegration skills. After successful mentorship programmes in local communities and correctional facilities involving counselling, football and art, we are inspired to expand our next mentorship program to benefit both Zambian and migrant children in detention facilities.
In collaboration with our Migration and Anti-Human Trafficking Team, the UP Zambia Social Support Team will focus on screening, identifying, and supporting victims of human trafficking in custody using trauma informed care.
Research highlights that both child and adult trafficking victims often face complex mental health challenges, including trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses such as substance use disorders and psychosis. Many victims also endure physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, further compounding these issues.
With this understanding, UP Zambia will provide weekly sports and arts programs for 150 children and adults and those at risk of human trafficking, designed to improve mental and physical well-being and serve as a positive coping strategy for those affected by trafficking. In addition, we will conduct counselling and educational sessions to inform participants about human trafficking, safe migration, asylum-seeking, and accessing social and psychological support.
We invite you to continue supporting UP Zambia in assisting Zambian children and migrant youth in correctional facilities, helping them improve their mental and physical health as they navigate the criminal justice system. Your support and partnership are invaluable in ensuring these children have access to essential social services in Zambia.
