Punto Crea - Creative Youth Makers in Guatemala!

Over the last quarter Punto Crea has continued to grow and develop. Our last report told you we were about to start working with ADP (Asociación de Amigos del Desarrollo y la Paz) and their sponsor Childfund. That project is now well underway! A first cadre of volunteer tutors has completed their phase 1 training and seven of them have been certified with Punto Crea's Innovative Tutor digital badge. They have now started their second phase training, which is where things get interesting: a condition for phase 2 certification is setting up at least one Punto Crea youth group in their community and meeting regularly with them. A further 2 tutors from our independent Jóvenes Creadores 2020 cadre have also already been certified at this level.

Significantly, all this has happened online. We have now fully moved The Punto Crea methodology online. It helped that all our tools and the STEAM learning challenge portfolio were designed from the start as online resources, but as has happened more generally in education, a lot of thought had to go into figuring out how to replace the weekly participant meeting with online activities. This included redirecting our budget to subsidizing connectivity for participants having to connect from home and designing a participant tool and resource kit they can use there instead of the tools and materials available in a physical Punto Crea. And of course, mastering web meeting software. A silver lining came from having to figure out how participants can demonstrate progress. In using Padlet, a collaborative digital bulletin board, we have found a way in which all participants can document their results in comparable ways, but at the same time retain their individuality and progress at their own rhythm. Challenging, but really exciting!

En el último trimestre Punto Crea ha continuado creciendo y consolidándose. Nuestro último reporte contaba cómo estábamos por empezar a trabajar con ADP (Asociación de Amigos del Desarrollo y la Paz) y su patrocinador Childfund. Ese proyecto ahora va bien encaminado. Una primera cohorte de tutores voluntarios ha completado su formación de fase 1 y siete tutores han recibido la certificación con nuestra insignia de Tutor Innovador. Ya han empezado su formación en fase 2, que es donde la cosa se pone interesante: una condición para certificarse es que deben establecer al menos un grupo de jóvenes Punto Crea en su comunidad y reunirse de forma regular con ellos. Otros 2 tutores de nuestro proceso independiente de Jóvenes Creadores 2020 ya se han certificado a este nivel.

Un aspecto significativo es que todo esto ha debido pasar en línea. Ya hemos adecuado toda la metodología de Punto Crea para trabajar así. Ayudó el que nuestros instrumentos y el portafolio de retos de aprendizaje STEAM fueran diseñados desde el inicio como recursos digitales en línea. Pero como ha ocurrido más ampliamente en la educación, debimos poner mucha atención en encontrar cómo sustituir las sesiones presenciales semanales con actividades en línea. Esto inluyó redirigir nuestro presupuesto a dar subsidios a la conectividad para los participantes que deben enlazarse desde casa y además desarrollar una caja de herramientas y recursos que pueden usar desde casa en lugar de las herramientas y fungibles disponibles en un Punto Crea físico. Y, por supuesto, fue necesario dominar el uso del software de videoconferencias. Un resultado inesperado vino de buscar una solución para que los jóvenes pudieran demostrar su progreso. Hemos comenzado a usar Padlet, un tablero de avisos digital colaborativo, que permite que los participantes documenten sus resultados de forma comparable, pero a la vez retienen su individualidad y pueden progresar a su propio ritmo. Ha sido retador, pero a la vez ¡emocionante!
