Punto Crea - Creative Youth Makers in Guatemala!

Dear Friend,

Think about a tree. There is a part you can easily see growing: the trunk, branches and leaves. But at the same time the tree is growing roots! In this report I want to tell you more about how Punto Crea is growing on the inside, how it is setting down its roots.

A critical aspect of this has been perfecting our pedagogy. The core of our learning methodology is the learning challenge: building on a question that youth find relevant, we invite them to exercise their curiosity, help them to find and use information, and we give them the chance to develop the skills in the STEAM areas but also the social and emotional skills (like persistence) they need to grow by facing challenges.

Over 2021 Luisa, our pedagogical specialist, review all our portfolio of learning challenges to make them more effective and better aligned with the national curriculum. She also developed a tutor handbook detailing how our volunteer tutors could use the learning challenges to foster engagement and learning among the youth participants in their respective Puntos Crea. Most importantly, she worked over the year with our facilitators and the volunteer tutors to ensure everybody understand these resources, knows how to use them and feels confident and empowered to apply them in communities. Punto Crea is becoming much more solid as an educational initiative!

However, my story is about both roots and branches! Our growing pedagogical mastery is bearing fruit, and others are recognizing it. From being exclusively a rural-based initiative, by way of one of our sponsors we now have been given the chance to set up Punto Crea in a municipal facility in Guatemala City. The venue is bigger and fancier, and city kids might have other expectations than their rural peers. But I have no doubt  the key to success will be our pedagogy: listening to them, focusing on their needs and building on their curiosity.

And this is where you come in, because it is your ongoing support that gives us the time and the space to build our organizational roots. Thanks for letting us grow on the inside, so we can then grow on the outside!

¡Hola!

Piensa en un árbol. Hay una parte que se ve crecer fácilmente: el tronco, las ramas y las hojas. ¡Pero al mismo tiempo el árbol echa raíces! En este reporte quiero contarte más sobre cómo Punto Crea está creciendo por dentro, cómo está echando raíces.

Un aspecto crítico de nuestro crecimiento «hacia adentro» ha sido perfeccionar nuestra pedagogía. El núcleo de nuestra metodología de aprendizaje es el reto de aprendizaje: partiendo de una pregunta que los jóvenes encuentran relevante, los invitamos a ejercitar su curiosidad, los ayudamos a encontrar y usar información, y les damos la oportunidad de desarrollar las habilidades en las áreas STEAM, pero también las habilidades sociales y emocionales (como la persistencia) que necesitan para crecer al enfrentar desafíos.

Durante el 2021 Luisa, nuestra especialista pedagógica, revisó todo nuestro portafolio de retos de aprendizaje para hacerlos más efectivos y mejor alineados con el currículo nacional. También desarrolló un manual para tutores que detalla cómo nuestros tutores voluntarios pueden usar los retos de aprendizaje para fomentar el compromiso y el aprendizaje entre los jóvenes participantes en sus respectivos Puntos Crea. Lo que es más importante, trabajó durante el año con nuestros facilitadores y tutores voluntarios para garantizar que todos comprendan estos recursos, sepan cómo usarlos y se sientan seguros y empoderados para aplicarlos en las comunidades. Punto Crea cobra mucha más solidez como iniciativa educativa.

Sin embargo, ¡mi historia es sobre raíces y también ramas! Nuestro creciente dominio pedagógico está dando sus frutos, y otros lo están reconociendo. De ser una iniciativa exclusivamente rural, ahora de la mano de uno de nuestros patrocinadores se nos ha dado la oportunidad de instalar Punto Crea en un recinto municipal de Ciudad de Guatemala. El lugar es más grande y elegante, y los jóvenes de la ciudad pueden tener otras expectativas que sus pares rurales. Pero no tengo ninguna duda de que la clave del éxito será nuestra pedagogía: escucharlos, centrarnos en sus necesidades y aprovechar su curiosidad.

Y aquí es donde entras tú, porque es tu apoyo continuo lo que nos da el tiempo y el espacio para construir nuestras raíces organizacionales. ¡Gracias por dejarnos crecer por dentro, para luego crecer por fuera!
