The Centre Marembo is not just the only residential place of refuge for abused street girls and teen/pre-teen mothers in Rwanda. It is a holistic institution for successful rehabilitation and reintegration. We combat the problems of homelessness, malnutrition, unemployment, trauma and drug addiction through our many services, which have turned around the lives of hundreds of girls and their infant babies so far.
Women and girls face particular problems living on the streets of Kigali City. Domestic labor, prostitution and drug addiction leave girls vulnerable to abuse, infection and childhood pregnancy. Kicked out of their homes, jobs or schools as a result of their situation they, and ultimately their babies, struggle to survive and have no opportunity to live. It is this that continues the cycle of violence faced by both street girls and street boys, and so it is here that the problem must be tackled
Our 5 pillar programs: 1) Health- cover physical and mental well-being 2) Education- Formal education from nursery to secondary so our beneficiaries or their children can attend to. 3) Socio-Economic & Development - Vocational courses to train them professional and personal skills in becoming financially independent individuals. 4) Reintegration: Access to workshops and social visits for re-integrated people. 5) Justice, Campaign and Advocacy: Access to legal assistant and legal advice.
There will be no children on the streets and no tolerance towards any form of children's rights violation.
