SDG 4: Help All Children Access Education in Nepal

Dear Supporters,

Community projects have been very busy! During January, the construction team built a rubbish bin for the school where they could safely and easily store and burn rubbish. To help introduce the students to the new rubbish bin, the healthcare team prepared a lesson on the environment and the importance of picking up rubbish with Class 4 and 5. We went through why they should want to keep the environment clean and taught the students a song about picking up rubbish. The lesson finished with a clean-up of the school grounds which was very effective. The school has been noticeably cleaner since the completion of the bins.

The healthcare volunteers prepared short lessons on what we identified as common school injuries such as bleeding, bruises, burns and sprains and fractures. We presented the lessons to the teachers and included a practical element, making sure the teachers practised each skill with the appropriate equipment from a first aid kit. This made the lessons fun for the teachers and helped them to practise their skills. On completion of all the lessons the healthcare volunteers are preparing a first aid kit to donate to the school, along with posters detailing what was learnt in the lessons that can be posted in the staff room near the first aid kit for easy reference.

The Boys from the Boys Home have moved into their new home and are settling in well. They are enjoying the larger space and our teams are already working with the committee to plan gardens and play areas for the boys. Our support with the food programme continues. There is much anticipation at Male Patan Childcare Centre as a new centre is being built. This will mean they can move from the community hall and into a building that’s sole purpose is a childcare
centre. This is a great move for the staff and children. As the Nepali school year draws to an end some of the children are almost ready for school the learning programme offered at the centre prepares the children for this next step.

English conversation continues to be the main focus of our Women’s Empowerment project and the numbers of women keen to develop their skills continues to increase. It’s great to see the improvement in confidence as the women learn new vocabulary but also as they benefit from the social interaction brought about by the lessons.
