Seasons Have Changed

By Hannah Westcott | Program Manager

Dear Supporters,

The seasons have changed and cooled off, revealing spectacular mountain views most mornings. People are rugged up and often burn small fires outside homes as many Nepali homes don't have any internal heating.

We have had a number of volunteers participate in our Adventure programmes where they trek for a fortnight to either Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Sanctuary. They have each chosen different projects to participate in but many have been interested in helping to complete the toilet blocks at both Yamdi and Hemja Government schools. From the initial building process which started in August, to putting on the final touches with paint, it’s a hugely beneficial process for each of the schools, who now have functional and accessible toilets for all of their students. The final coats of paint are anticipated to be completed in the upcoming week.

Volunteers recently had the opportunity to help with the annual rice harvest and thresh rice for a day with a local family at Pame. Volunteers had to thresh the grains from the stalks, then spread the stalks onto a pile for oxen to soften, before this was bundled up and carried on their heads up to a collection point 10 minutes away up the hill. 387 kilos of rice was harvested throughout the day, and a fundraiser is ongoing for the GVI Trust to raise funds for the upcoming year and programmes.

One of our interns, Robert, designed and ran a fantastic workshop for the local community children on the impacts of climate change. A four part workshop, it included basic information about the environment, how climate change is affecting our natural environments and what small things the children can do locally in their own lives to impact change. A pre and post survey set of data revealed a 25% increase in their knowledge. Alongside this we held 2 separate litter collection afternoons, where over 90 kilos of litter was picked up from community parks and popular trekking routes.

As the year continues we are reminded of the generosity of so many people who choose to work alongside us. By choosing to support our work, you not only provide financial assistance to the projects, but you bolster the hope and belief amongst the community that they deserve to be supported and given opportunities. It inspires staff to continue striving for better and reminds all of us of the power of generosity. We look forward to welcoming new and existing funders into our journey this year

With Gratitude,

Nepal Community
