We are once again thankful for your choice to support us and the call for justice for victims of torture in Chiapas, Mexico. Its’ a long way to go, but we are very excited to share with you the story of Don Alfredo an update on what’s still ahead in some of our cases.
Imprisoned since July 2014, Alfredo has spent nearly a decade of his life behind bars for a crime he did not commit and that the prosecution showed no evidence he did, other than his signature on blank pages later filled with false statements. He still lives with the results of the torture implicated on him, strong hits in the ribs and spinal cord. His partner, Marbella, did not rest. She did everything possible, being his biggest advocate, and eventually it paid off. We got to hug him and wish the couple well in their new freedom. There’s no turning the time back and there’s yet reparation by the state to all he’s been through, but we are celebrating this step in the struggle for justice.
Frayba supported Alfredo since 2018, and not once has he given up. Not once has Marbella given up on him.
We continue to work alongside torture victims and their families until justice is made. In August and September 2023, we took testimonies of 17 people, who were brave enough to tell us their stories. We took on to support more than 150 people since 2020.
We continue demanding justice for the five tsotsil prisoners who untied in hunger strike in 2021, all freed since, and now we are acting for the international recognition of the crimes carried out against them. In the case of Yonny Ronay, we are about to start the re-trial, hoping to free him from the bogus charges and getting him together with his family. In the case of Manuel, BAEZLN Zapatista youth who has horribly tortured emotionally and physically we continue to act for his immediate freedom. Next months, tens of family victims of torture victims will come together in San Cristóbal to demand justice and continue to form their just struggle.
Thank you for walking this road with us
