Support for Afghanistan

Thank you for your support of this project. I'm writing to share some updates on ActionAid's work.

Over the past few years, Afghanistan has been impacted by several crises. On June 22, 2022, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the central region of Afghanistan impacting over 30,000 people at a time when 20 million people were already facing an acute hunger crisis, including 2 million children at the risk of malnutrition.

Addtionally, those who have been displaced by ongoing conflict, drought, famine, and natural disaster find themselves in new cities without a way to pay for food, rent, or fuel to heat their homes.

Since these converging crises, ActionAid has continued to work across Afghanistan with partners. To date, your support has enabled us to provide the following to people and communities who have been most impacted: 

• Cash support for food, fuel, and heating equipment.
• Winter clothing, blankets, and pillows.
• Emergency food assistance and safe water.
• Sanitation and hygiene support, including hygiene kits for women and girls.
• Counseling support for displaced people, to help address the stress and anxiety of the current situation.

ActionAid is continuing our response and is scaling up efforts to ensure that we can the reach areas where internally displaced people are fleeing, providing them with increased access to essential serivces.

Thank you so much for your support of this project. I’m writing to share some updates from ActionAid’s emergency response in Afghanistan. We appreciate you taking the time to learn about and act in response to this crisis.

Following a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan in October 2023, which has killed at least 2,000 people, injured more than 3.000 - including 600 children - and affected around 20,000 more, ActionAid is providing lifesaving support to the families in some of the worst-affected areas. Damaged housing, plus the fear of returning home due to persistent aftershocks, led to several informal sites sprouting across Herat City, the area where the earthquake and aftershocks took place. These displacements sites are being continuously assessed and a humanitarian response is ongoing.

The earthquake has exacerbated the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country, where nearly 20 million Afghans - one third of the population - face acute hunger, and has disrupted essential services making it extremely difficult for people to access clean water, shelter, and medical support. ActionAid is on the ground supplying food, water, and cash transfers to support over 1,000 families who have been impacted by this disaster. ActionAid is committed to proving both short and long-term support to affected Afghans, and we are providing permanent housing to families, while still working to mobilize further resources.
