Christmas Giving for Survivors of the 1965 Tragedy

Like Christmas moments in previous years, Indonesia untuk Kemanusiaan (IKa) conducted public fundraising for elderly survivors of the 1965 tragedy through “Christmas Gift for Elderly Survivors of the ’65 Tragedy”. This fundraising took place from 14 December 2022 to 22 December 2022. During this period, IKa managed to collect donations in the amount of IDR 6,525,000 (equivalent to 427 USD) from 10 individual donors.

IKa collaborated with Solidaritas Indonesia (SI), a companion organization for elderly survivors of past gross human rights violations in distributing donations.The funds were then distributed to 12 elderly survivors in Sragen and 13 elderly survivors in Klaten to help them meet their daily needs, such as meals and their medications.

This support carries its own meaning for elderly survivors.Uchikowati, a representative for Solidaritas Indonesia, said that there is an elderly survivor whom SI assisted in Klaten who has never received any sort of support.It was only through “Christmas Gift for Elderly Survivors of the ’65 Tragedy” that she finally received support.

We certainly would not be able to achieve this without the support of our generous donors. Waiting for restitution from the state for elderly survivors is actually a race against time. The elderly survivors are getting older and they become even more vulnerable. Therefore, IKa will continue working to humbly meet the needs of the elderly through resource-raising and distributing them. We certainly hope that the solidarity we have established will never cease and will always continue to grow stronger.

Elderly Gathering to Update on Conditions and Needs of the Elders

Indonesia for Humanity (IKa) along with the National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) held an elderly gathering event on August 26, 2022. This activity took place in a hybrid mode in five regions, Jakarta, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Aceh, Palu, and Sikka. A total of approximately 90 elderly people attended this meeting.

Mainly, this elderly gathering served as a symbolic activity of handing over in-kind support in a form of supporting devices, such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, and glasses for the elderly to support their day-to-day mobilization. This procurement was important for them because many elderly people were disabled, either due to illness or old age. At least, 600 elderly in Indonesia received these supporting devices and 200 other elderly received dignity kits. In addition, this event aimed to check up on the condition of the elderly, as well as to update on what needs of the elderly still need to be met.

The elderly who attended were accompanied by accompaniers from civil society organizations in their respective regions. This moment also became an opportunity for the accompaniers to share challenges and opportunities in advocating for policies, particularly regarding the reparation of the rights of victims of past gross human rights violations.

Procurement of supporting devices for the elderly was one of the efforts made to meet the needs of the elderly. The elderly certainly felt grateful for the supporting devices they received. However, it was also hoped that the support received did not stop there. The elderly still need to be empowered. However, with all their limitations and vulnerabilities, support from the public is still very much needed. Hopefully, more and more people would become aware of and care about the issue of elderly victims of past gross human rights violations and would be willing to support and advocate for them.

Eid Al-Fitr Joy for Elderly Survivors of '65 Tragedy

A joyful Eid for the elderly survivors

The joy of Hari Raya is the right of all human beings. For this year's Eid al-Fitr event, Indonesia for Humanity (IKa) presented a memorable Hari Raya for survivors of past gross human rights violations, especially the elderly survivors of '65 tragedy (Si Mbah).

IKa arranged a fundraising entitled "Bingkisan Hari Raya untuk Si Mbah '65" or "Eid Al-Fitr Gift for the Elderly Victims of the '65 Tragedy". This fundraising took place from April 7, 2022 to April 26, 2022. Within a period of approximately two weeks, we managed to collect donations a sum of Rp 5,985,000,- (equivalent to $398). Aside from that, our effort to bring a joyful Eid for the elderly survivors too was made possible by the donations we have received through GlobalGiving - that successfully has allowed everyone from outside of Indonesia to connect and support humanity works from all around the globe.

IKa did not work alone in distributing this joy to the elderly survivors of the '65 tragedy. In doing so, IKa collaborated with a number of supporting organizations that work to assist elderly survivors of past gross human rights violations. On this occasion, IKA collaborated with KontraS, Sekber'65, Solidaritas Indonesia (SI), and Kiprah Perempuan (KIPPER). A total of 19 elderly survivors on the island of Java became the beneficiaries of the fundraising to meet the needs of the Eid Al-Fitr celebration.

It is undeniable that the impact of systematic stereotyping has an impact even to the survivors’ next generations. This occassion is not only a form of sharing love in the month of Ramadan, but also a form of concern on behalf of human rights, as well as a reminder that there is still unfinished history that leaves severe deprivations for the survivors.

"As a victim of the '65 tragedy, I am very grateful for the help from all of my friends. This donation shows our care and love for us who have been fighting for justice for years,” said Nani Nurani, one of the survivors of the '65 tragedy who received the donation.

We certainly feel very delighted to be able to come together in the month of Ramadan this year. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of our dearest donors who have donated and helped delivered a memorable Eid for the elderly survivors. We hope that this will strengthen our solidarity to help in providing a comfortable old age for the elderly who have survived past gross human rights violations.
