Summary

Due to the prevailing pandemic, our youth centre remains closed, however, It is important we ensure the youth are not idle and remain positively engaged during these times of uncertainty brought by Covid-19. We have taken up remote learning doing zoom classes every day of the week. Our youth, who largely come from less privileged backgrounds are at risk and from engaging them other challenges have arisen hence we are now offering psychosocial support and food packages beyond remote learning.

Challenge

In Kenya, youth aged 15-24 make up 20% of the total population, above the world's average of 15.8%. The 17-24 age bracket in Kenya is largely from underprivileged backgrounds Only 5% enter the formal labour market each year, therefore unemployment then becomes a critical enabler to the cycle of poverty, social vulnerability and risk. This project will equip them with skills training and mentorship to increase employment and income-earning potential for long-lasting economic self-sufficiency

Solution

Train & develop skills in personal financial management & Entrepreneurship. Train in practice basic ICT skills that meet minimum proficiency for employment. Develop & build critical thinking skills, self-efficacy & personal growth through life skills, Individual tailored mentorship & coaching from mentors whose expertise is aligned with the interests of each youth. Identify & match youth with opportunities for continuing education, job placement, or seed-funding bridging their exit from program.

Long-Term Impact

The project aims for the increased economic viability of youth and their households allowing them to rise out of the cycle of poverty. The youth who are enrolled will be more empowered to make decisions around life and career options. This will hopefully reduce the risk and vulnerability of disadvantaged youth Lastly, we expect an increase in the access and uptake of economic and academic opportunities for the high school graduates enrolled on the program.
