Empower migrant women and girls in technology

By Sonia Agnesod | Planning, coordination and compliance

Why is it essential to empower migrant women and girls in technology?

The lack of access to resources, discrimination in the workplace, and gender-based violence, are just some of the challenges faced by migrant women in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Although women represent approximately half of internal migrants in Latin America and the Caribbean, they are the ones who face the greatest challenges and risks when migrating, such as lack of access to resources, discrimination in the workplace, or the risk of gender-based violence.

Technology training is a key tool to help them face these vulnerabilities, but also to improve their chances of finding a job online, doing business, managing knowledge, or simply communicating with family and friends. Technology can also facilitate the defense of their rights by accessing information on protection, health services, education, legal assistance or reporting situations of gender violence and other forms of abuse.

Finally, training in technology can help reducing the digital gender gap, which is evidenced in access to smartphones and use of social networks by migrant women, and ensuring that women and girls are not left behind in the era of digital transformation.
