Bringing Books and Storytelling to Underserved Children in Kabul

By Freshta Karim | Founder

Thanks to your generous support, in the first half of 2023 Charmaghz has welcomed over 100,000 child visitors to our Mobile Libraries in Kabul, Afghanistan. Our five Bus Mobile Libraries, one Van Mobile Library, and ten Library Boxes enable underserved children to experience the joy of books and reading, and develop foundational academic and social skills that will prepare them for lifelong learnring. More often than not, our libraries are the only source of storybooks for children, many of whom do not have books at home.

Afghanistan continues to be an extremely challenging context for grassroots, rights-based NGOs such as Charmaghz, and in particular for our female staff and the girls who visit our libraries. We are proud that so far in 2023, 53% (nearly 54,000) of our visitors have been girls. Our team of female Librarians are highly skilled in working with local communities and families to ensure girls have access to the Libraries, and also negotiating with the Taliban at a very local level to ensure our programs can continue operating. Our programs continue to be a lifeline for girls who are otherwise often excluded from education.

We strongly believe that our work is now more important than ever, given the mounting barriers Afghan children face to receiving a quality education that prepares them to be literate and critical thinkers. Books and stories play a key role in opening a child's eyes to the world around them, and encouraging them to reflect, question, and wonder.

Our work serving Afghan children would not be possible without your ongoing commitment - we are so thankful for your continued support!
