Happy 4th Birthday
Last month, we celebrated our 4th Birthday on the Neonatal Unit in Mbale! Four years ago we could never have imagined what we would become today.
In partnership with Mbale Regional Referral Hospital and with the support of some amazing fundraisers and donors, our amazing neonatal team works tirelessly alongside the midwives, nurses, clinicians and junior doctors to teach and train everyone they can about newborn care. Little by little the skills and knowledge is spreading and more families are being helped.
Every month in the neonatal unit, we care for over 200 sick or preterm neonates with love and dedication. Together we have treated almost 10,000 babies and saved the lives of over 3,000 babies who, without the neonatal unit, would have died. We are thankful for the changes we have seen, the lives we have saved and the babies and their families that we have had the privilege of caring for.
We enjoyed cake, a little singing and baby gifts on the ward today. A donation of knitted sets from the UK were given to the babies for their birthday treat!
Neonatal Champions
Over the past few months we have completed our new basic and simplified neonatal training course in four of our health centre IVs. We have trained over 60 midwives and nurses in these health centre IVs and the feedback has been great.
From each course we selected two midwives to become the Neonatal Champions at their respective health centres.
Early in May, we were privileged to host the first four neonatal champions on the neonatal unit. Their enthusiasm and dedication to learn was amazing and we all had a fun time. Their feedback was amazing; “we actually know what all those things we learnt about in the course look like now” and “we need to come back and learn more”.
We look forward to the next 4 neonatal champions and to extending this opportunity further.
Of course none of this would be possible without our dedicated neonatal trainers, Juliet, Linda and Kathy. We are looking for a new group of dedicated people, like yourselves, who would be willing to support them on a monthly basis. A small donation will make all the difference and allow them to continue their work.
