Suad's Meaningful Participation with UNICEF's YPAG

By Aunger Aung | Project Officer

Suad was recently selected as one of 45 outstanding young people to join UNICEF’s Young Person’s Advisory Group (YPAG), a UNICEF programme initiative designed to promote and strengthen the meaningful participation of young people in decision-making impacting children’s right in Malaysia.

As part of the YPAG cohort, Suad participated in a number of impactful initiatives, including a visit to the Malaysian Parliament. There, YPAG members engages with Members of Parliament to discuss pressing issues concerning children and youth. During one of these discussions, Suad raised an important question close to her heart:

“What will happen to Palestinian students on student visas after completing their studies? Will they be required to return to their home country [where their homes have been destroyed]?”

Her intervention highlighted the often-overlooked challenges faced by refugee and displaced youth, calling for compassionate and inclusive policy solutions.

In addition to advocacy work, Suad and her peers gained deeper insight into the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC), which laid the foundation for their efforts to champion the rights of children in Malaysia and beyond.

A particularly inspiring moment for Suad was visiting UNICEF Malaysia’s offices, where she saw the organisation’s behind-the-scenes work to improve the lives of children. This experience reaffirmed her commitment to using policy advocacy digital storytelling, and education as tools for change especially for youth affected by conflict.

Alongside her work with YPAG, Suad also recently secured a six-month internship as an Administrative Assistant at Infinite Minds, an institution with mission to empower neurodiverse youths with essential digital skills tailored to their unique needs, fostering independence and growth. This opportunity allows her to further develop her professional skills while continuing her mission to create meaningful impact in youth education and empowerment.

Suad’s journey is a powerful reminder of what young people can achieve when given the opportunity to lead, advocate, and shape a better future for themselves and others.
