By Jean Baumgardner | The Solidarity Project Board President
This past May, I traveled to Honduras to welcome in our new Project Director, Melisa and meet with Board Vice President, Lauren as well as our Honduran partner communities to see the work that together we are accomplishing!
I was incredibly proud of what I found.
I was proud of Lesli, one of our women leader interns and community health worker volunteers, who has been using her leadership skills and stipend to open her own small business, a beautiful coffee shop and internet cafe, the first of its kind in her village! She showed us the how she manages our community pharmacy project and shared stories of attending patients’ wounds and providing medications such as ibuprofen that villagers normally would have to travel hours to purchase.
I felt proud of our community health worker volunteer program and so grateful to Hector and Lilian from the Red Cross for all of the trainings they have given our team so that our volunteers can attend to basic medical needs that arise in their villages.
I felt proud of our partner communities who participate in our Mesa Comuntaria micro-grant program. I saw the water improvement project that was recently completed with our funding in Ocotal and was thrilled to hear that this project allows villagers to all have access to water throughout the day, rather than just for a few hours in the morning.
I felt proud of Melisa, our new Project Director who is from one of the partner villages we work with, who has stepped into her new role with skill, creativity, and leads our work so beautifully!
I was proud of one of our partner artists, Marcio, who had his work on display at the Intercontinental in Tegucigalpa.
I felt proud of Lauren, Carolyn, and Rosi who all work so hard to keep The Solidarity Project going.
And I am so proud of you for the ways that you so live out solidarity in action through the support of our work. Together we can continue to support Honduran leaders in making positive social change in their communities.
In Solidarity,
Jean
