School facilities, classroom environment, learning and teaching materials are very important in contributing to effective learning and in following the Child-Friendly School guidelines as defined by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. That is why This Life Cambodia helps to fund school improvements such as libraries, sports fields, fencing, gardens and land raising (to prevent flooding). And we also provide training to communities on how to fundraise so they can also contribute to the costs of school development projects. A few examples of school development projects in this period include:
Chann Sar: Construction of an office for teachers and of a school garden;
Kampong Khleang: Filling the school ground and path (community is prone to flooding due to location on the Tonle Sap) and installing a water system;
Trapaing Prey: Creating a school garden and building 200 meters of school fence .
Other projects completed include the procurement of sporting equipment, student club's materials, books, math materials, and bookshelves for teachers' office.
Mr. Sen (name changed) is the school vice principal at Run TaEk Lower Secondary school. He wants to improve the school environment and the quality of education in Run TaEk and to build strong relationships between the school, community members, and other stakeholders.
This school is in a rural area around 22 kilometers from Siem Reap town and was chosen in part because it faced many problems including the lack of toilets, not enough water and a library that is disorganized and lacking books and materials. With training from our team, Mr.Sen and other School Support Committee (SSC) members, have taken stronger ownership of their school’s development. They have written a school development plan and through sessions on Communication, Fundraising and Proposal Writing, the SSC under Sen’s lead has raised $1158 on their own for building a volleyball and basketball court, school garden and school fences.
“I am so glad that I have the good partner as TLC supports and helps us through providing various capacity building topics in order to improve our abilities for school development, I hope we can bring more achievement to our school for helping the children for their learning”.
