How Communities Contribute to School Development

While This Life Cambodia contributes funds directly for school improvement projects such as libraries, sports fields, and land raising (to prevent flooding), we also provide fundraising training to communities.   We train School Support Committees on how to raise money in their communities, and how to request funding from government resources or from other NGOs. Not only are they then contributing to the costs of school development projects but they become more empowered, self sustaining communities.

"I am very proud of TLC in supporting both capacity building of the SSC for improving their active participation in school development and providing funding for our school development priorities. I found that it is very important for us to help the children for better learning”, said Mrs. K. (SSC member of Run TaEk lower secondary school).

The following examples illustrate that when equipped with the right training and support, communities are capable of raising money to address their priorities, a good example of sustainable development practice:

  • School Fences built in Run Ta Ek and Khun Ream (to keep out buffalo from school gardens and play area). $1,182 contributed by the community including labor (total cost: $4252)
  • Construction of Volleyball and Football fields in 3 lower secondary schools: RunTaEk, Teuk Lech, Kauk Kandal: $1,119 contributed by communities including labor (total cost: $4,159)
  • Building homestays for teachers and students who live far from school in Khun Ream and O’Takok: $2,634 in bricks/wood contributed by communities plus labor (total cost: $5,015)
  • Land leveling in school compounds (to prevent flooding), and building pathway from the school gate to  buildings in 3 lower secondary schools at O’Takok, Kauk Kandal and Tuek Lech: $1,933 raised in communities plus labor (total cost: $3,473)
