Project Update (Q3 2024)

By Stuart Patience | Board Member

Dear supporters,

We're grateful to provide you with another update on the progress of our work in Indonesia, especially in the poorer urban areas.

Setback
At the same time, we want to be honest in our reports. As we mentioned in our last update, we hoped to have a training session in Jakarta for 15 teachers by now. Unfortunately, this training has been postponed to the next quarter because it was school holiday time, and the teachers were not available. But at the same time it gave us the oppertunity to connect with several other partners, who potientally will join this next training.

Street children
But, in the meantime, we managed to train a group of teachers working with street children in Malang, another large city on the island of Java. Supporting teachers who work with children in poorer urban areas is one of our core goals, so we are grateful that we could provide them with training, books, and reading materials. We believe that education is a key part of helping families to break out of poverty, and we hope these interventions will make a difference in the lives of these children and their communities.

Research
This year, we hope to start a small study on the reading levels in one of the poorer areas of Jakarta. We want to do this because we hope the data will give us better insights into what is needed and help us apply for more funds in these areas. Sometimes, we notice more attention is given to remote areas of Indonesia, but we see that certain parts of the cities need help and support just as much!

So again, thank you for your support! As with your support, we will continue to look for opportunities to train more teachers and help more children learn to read.

Salam Literasi,
