Thank you again for your continuous support to the Thailand Flood Relief Fund.   The Thailand Flood Relief Fund is directed at rebuilding efforts for the floods that occurred in 2011 during the monsoon season. Flooding began in Northern Thailand during the end of July and gradually spread into the southern part of the country, eventually submerging parts of Bangkok. Farms, villages, and industrial plants were all affected, causing at least US $45.7 billion in damage as of December 2011.

This fund has been instrumental in assistance in the rebuilding efforts after the floods destroyed countless homes, thanks to your donations! So far, your donations have helped to get food, medical supplies, and sanitary products to those who needed them most; and helped to rebuild damaged schools and the supply chains of local artisans once the floodwaters had receded. This month, we have chosen to highlight DARE – one of the recipients of this fund for their project Rebuild Flooded Burma Refugee Camp Recovery Centre.

DARE (Drug & Alcohol Recovery & Education) provides treatment and prevention education to reduce substance abuse within the communities of displaced ethnic people from Burma along the Thai/Burma border.  The flood in 2011 destroyed DARE’s treatment facilities.  DARE immediately began to rebuild their buildings while continuing treatment for people who desperately needed it.  Currently, they are in need of funds to re-supply the interior of the buildings.

DARE is asking for sleeping mats, mosquito nets and white boards for trainings.  The facilities also need kitchen supplies which include stoves and pots.  Young people that require treatment especially enjoy sports equipment, art supplies, and musical instruments.  Your generous contributions are needed more than ever. The Burma people are coming into Thailand and the camps around DARE are not addressing the people’s needs as much as DARE can.

Thailand’s monsoon season is upon the region again.  Please keep a watchful eye on Thailand and Southeast Asia, and hope for the best this winter.  Thank you for your support of Thailand’s Flood Relief Fund!

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
