Sedentary lifestyle choices and inactivity are very common among this generation of elementary aged children, which increases their chances of developing chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, asthma. The school environment may contribute to this problem by offering no more than 20 minutes of recess daily in many elementary schools, while spending the majority of the day focused on classroom content.
The curriculum review process for the healthy kids school process begun. The Kenya Instritute of Curriculum Development set up a team that reviewed the CATCH content that is to be adopted in schools.
The process is ongoing and after the review a the pilot impmementtaion will be the next step. The process has been delayed due to the the general elections that was happening in Kenya.
The target number of schools for the pilot is:
- 30 schools
- 4 teachers per school
- Grade 1 to Grade 4
We have also made some progress with the Ministry of Education where we have submitted our Memorundum of Understanding for signing. The MoU will give us access to schools and the education officers will be duly informed.
