Kenya is among the countries that has suffered immensely with the adverse effects of climate change, with some parts of the country experiencing five failed rain seasons. This has led to loss of people's lives, livestock and the remaining ones relying entirely on aid and relief for survial. Children and women as well as the elderly have been the most affected population. The biting drought led to many boys and girls dropping out of school, young children suffering mulnutrition while few surving expectant women endured hell to bring life and sustain the new borns under the scotching drought.
Families with girls used the young girls as means of sustaining the other family members by having them subjected to FGM and later married off to anyone who could offer a few heads of cattle or food aid to the family in exchange of the "wife". In light of this emergency, Men End FGM and our consortium partner Pastoralist Child Foundation (PCF) partnering with UNICEF Kenya enrolled 150 households in Samburu county and supported them with direct cash transfers to support these most vulnerable families meet their basic needs of food, education and clothing. During this period, we have been undertaking case management, following up on the utilization of the cash advanced to the households, holding regular dialogues with the community members on the need to abandon FGM, responding to the plight of victims of FGM and other forms of GBV by supporting them access medical aid, legal aid and offering psychosocial support and distributed 215 dignity kits to the most vulnerable girls and caregivers.
Our trained Child Protection Volunteers (CPVs) made home visits during the period, visiting over the 350 cases that were identified for case management. These included FGM cases, unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) cases, GBV cases, cases of child neglect, malnutrition, cases of school drop-outs and cases of early marriage /teenage motherhood among others. During this period, we also trained stakeholders drawn from government agencies, civil society and the community gatekeepers on child protection in emergency to stregthen the response mechanism on child protection issues during emergency as well as enhance inter-agency collaboration in addressing these cases. The training was supported by UNICEF Kenya.
