Alternative to Violence Project (AVP)

Location: Nyamagabe Women's Prison, Nyamagabe District, Southern Province, Rwanda

Dates: February 26th - 28th, 2025

Participants: 30 Women Prisoners

The Alternative to Violence Project (AVP) conducted a three - day training workshop at Nyamagabe Women's prison from February 26th to 28th, 2025. The program aimed to equip incarcerated women with practical tools and techniques for resolving conflicts nonviolently, fostering personal growth, and promoting a culture of peace within the prison environment.

Objectives

  • To introduce participants to the principles of nonviolent communication and conflict transformation.
  • To empower women with skills in active listening, cooperation, and empathy.
  • To create a safe and supportive space for personal reflection and healing
  • To encourage participants to become change agents within their community.

Participants

A total of 30 women prisoners participated in the training. The group represented a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, and all showed a strong commitment to personal development and transformation throughout the workshop.

Training Activities

The training included a variety of participatory exercises and sessions:

  • Trust - building activities
  • personal storytelling and sharing experiences
  • Conflict resolution role - plays
  • Group discussions on anger, fear, and forgiveness
  • Work on communication skills and empathy
  • Reflections on inner transformation and community impact

Facilitators encouraged active participation, openness, and mutual respect, allowing the women to express themselves freely and support one another in the process.

Outcomes

  • Increased awareness among participants about the roots and dynamics of violence.
  • Development of positive interpersonal communication and listening skills.
  • Strengthened sense of community, solidarity, and emotional support among the women.
  • Many participants expressed a desire to continue engaging in peacebuilding activities within the prison.

Participants reported feeling empowered, hopeful, and more in control of their emotional responses.

Conclusion and Recommendations

The AVP training at Nyamagabe Women's Prison was a success, with high levels of engagement and positive feedback. continued support and follow-up sessions are recommended to reinforce the skills learned and sustain the momentum for personal and communal transformation. Expanding the program to reach more prisoners across the region could have a lasting impact on reducing violence and promoting reconciliation.
