Continuing Professional Development Workshop Report

Date of Workshops January 10-14, 2022

Submitted to Friends of Liberia-US & GlobalGiving

With the concept that continuing professional development (CPD) maintains up-to-date knowledge, skills, and attitudes of professionals, the Friends of Liberia (FOL)-Liberia Health Team sought and received  $17, 000.00 U.S.D.(Seventeen thousand United States Dollars) from FOL-US & GlobalGiving to conduct CPD workshops for 21 nursing/midwifery faculty and 21 nursing/midwifery supervisors from across Liberia. As Micallef & Kayyali (2019) have clearly indicated, the increasing roles for nurses, midwives, and other healthcare providers prompted the need to continuingly up-grade the skills and competency of these cadres of healthcare providers. Therefore the overarching goal of the FOL-GlobalGiving sponsored workshop is to ensure that the knowledge, skills, and attitude of participants are sufficiently enhanced to provide quality education and evidence-based healthcare to patients, respectively.

As a training arm of FOL-US, FOL-LHT has conducted three CPD workshops for 60 nursing/midwifery faculty from 23 accredited nursing/midwifery schools and two workshops for 40 nursing/midwifery supervisors from hospitals throughout the length and breadth of Liberia. In turn, the participants are required to act as extended trainers in their various nursing/midwifery training institutions and hospitals.

Unlike the previous workshops of 2020 and 2021, the 2022 workshop consisted of a two-day nursing/midwifery faculty workshop, a one-day joint workshop, and two-day nursing/midwifery supervisors’ workshop. The purpose of the joint workshop was to create an enabling environment where faculty and clinicians could share their perspectives on how to collaborate to enhance nursing education.

The following topics were presented during the Jan. 10 to 14 workshops.

January 10 & 11 2022—participants: nursing/midwifery faculty

  1. Issues Related to Testing and Evaluation

            a) Broad Objectives: To help participants minimize test biases, address the issues of grade and test score inflation, and the effect of tests and grades on self-esteem, writing and analyzing test items (Oermann & Gaberson, 2020)

        2.Nursing Education through Distance Learning

             a) Broad objective: Coping with the emerging modes of course deliveries as a result of the global spread of infectious diseases.

         3. Faculty Roles in Accreditation

a ) Broad Objective: To understand the roles faculty (full-time or research faculty) play in accreditation.

          4. Program Evaluation and Accreditation:

                a) Broad Objective: To explain the elements and processes of program evaluation and accreditations.

January 12, 2022—participants: Nursing/Midwifery Faculty and Supervisor Joint Session.

  1. Using preceptors in Clinical Teaching
  2. Broad Objective: to discuss the role of preceptors in clinical teaching; preceptor vs. clinical instructors
  3. Linking Theory with Clinical Experiences
    1. Broad objectives: To ensure that classroom teaching is properly aligned with clinical teaching and activities.

January 13 & 14

           1. Quality Improvement in the Clinical Settings

                a) Broad Objective: To improve the quality of healthcare through evidence-based practice.

            2. Decision-Making and Problem-Solving

a)Broad Objective: To enable participants to understand the decision-making process and become insightful when deriving at a decision based on the decision-making process.

              3. Transitioning Graduate Nurses to Clinical Practice.

                  a) Broad Objective: To mitigate challenges new graduate nurses face when joining the healthcare workforce environment. Particular attention has been focused on the insufficient practice sessions nursing/midwifery student experienced during the Ebola epidemic and recently the COVID-19 pandemic.

How learning was measured.

Pre-post tests were administered to determine the level of learning achievement in each topic.

Evaluation of the workshops using a-5 point Likert Scale.

Overall, participants strongly agreed that the instructional objectives were met and would like FOL & GlobalGiving to continue providing support to their Liberian counterparts to continue the CPD workshops which will contribute to the quality and effectiveness of the healthcare delivery system in Liberia.

Next Immediate Plan

Follow-up visits starting May 2022

  1. Assess the impact of the training in the participants’ institutions
  2. Conduct a focus group discussion
    1. Next topics—during the focus group discussions, participants will select areas of interest for the 2023 workshop. Participants will also be encouraged to share how they think our training workshops can be further improved.
