Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund

Thank you for your generous contribution to the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund. As we approach the three-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, your donations continue to make a meaningful impact on our partners’ ability to address the needs of their communities each day. Moreover, your support offers a glimmer of hope and motivation for countless Ukrainian communities that are exhausted after more than 1,000 days of war.

Beyond the continued violence, our partners have also faced catastrophic floods this fall. Juggling both disasters was no small task—but our partners pushed through to serve their communities.

Since we last wrote, the GlobalGiving Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund has made 35 new grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of responding to community needs.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported: 

• Odessa Charity Foundation Way Home provides emergency aid in war-torn eastern Ukraine, offering meals, clothes, and psychological support to families in Odessa, along with safe shelter in partnership with other nonprofits. Their team also runs a summer program—which trained 60 disadvantaged youth in agriculture and entrepreneurship this year.

• Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation installs hybrid solar stations in schools and hospitals and offers sustainability courses to students, with the joint goals of protecting communities during electricity blackouts and fostering a more environmentally sustainable Ukraine. 

• Ukrainian Down Syndrome Organization supports the families of individuals with Down Syndrome through relocation assistance, essential supplies, and medical care.  Each year, the organization hosts two camps and provides ongoing support for 100 families. The team’s newest goal is to renovate a space dedicated to disability-focused activities.

• SavED restores access to education in war-affected regions of Ukraine by setting up bomb shelters in schools and creating alternative classrooms. It offers online learning when needed, focusing on de-occupied areas and those near active conflict zones. The organization also conducts research on the war's impact on education, produces documentaries, and advocates internationally for the protection of children. 

• Krakow Food Bank is a central service provider in Krakow supporting the many Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Since the onset of the war, the organization has delivered 1.7 million meals, valued at $1.9 million USD, to Ukrainian refugees in Krakow. In collaboration with 70 partner nonprofits, they continue to provide ongoing food assistance in both Ukraine and Poland.

• Right to Protection Poland offers mental health services, cash assistance, legal support, and housing assistance for displaced refugees living in Poland.  Since 2023, the organization has stepped up in big ways to support its community as changes in national rental assistance laws have made it more difficult for refugees, like Ukrainians, to rent in Poland. 

• Mission Kharkiv has grown significantly since the start of the full-scale invasion, mobilizing over $52 million in donations into specialized oncology medicines for individuals affected by cancer on the frontlines of the war.  Currently, the organization manages underground spaces, which their team has converted into cold storage for cancer medications amid power outages in Kharkiv

Thank you for your generous contribution to the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund. Two and a half years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, your donations continue to make a difference in our partners’ ability to face even the most tragic circumstances head-on. 

Just this week, Russian missile strikes bombarded seven of Kyiv’s 10 districts, damaging many buildings - including the country’s largest children’s hospital, Okhmatdyt. This hospital serves thousands of pediatric cancer patients annually in Kyiv with the support and leadership of GlobalGiving partner Tabletochki Foundation.

Levgeniia, a director at Tabletochki, shared more details with GlobalGiving about this recent tragedy: 

“The new building housing the oncohematology and radiology departments was significantly damaged by the shockwave. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but it is clear that it is colossal…The children have been transferred to other hospitals, but these facilities are not fully equipped to handle such a high number of critically ill patients.” 

In these dark times,  your support makes a difference. Alongside a community of supporters from all over the world, YOUR commitment to backing the GlobalGiving Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund meant that our team could send 21 new grants this month to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis, including those responding to the latest missile attack. 

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported: 

• Zaporuka Foundation is keeping children’s medical treatment alive amidst a war. This Kyiv-based team works with local organizations and authorities to provide medical support, specifically focusing on helping children and their families navigate conditions like cancer and epilepsy. Since the attack on Kyiv's Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital, Zaporuka's team has been working in the community to continue supplying critical medical care to injured children. They also coordinate with peer groups to restore hospital facilities so they can continue saving lives in Ukraine.

• Tabletochki Foundation is also rising to meet the needs of children with cancer through ongoing care, medications, and mental health support to Ukrainian children and their families. Despite the recent airstrikes on Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, Tabletochki’s team perseveres. They will continue to support pediatric cancer patients across Ukraine—including those relocated from the hospital in the days following this terrible attack.

• Voice of Children is a Kyiv-based partner working to ensure that “no child is left alone with the experience of war.” The team operates a network of 15 centers throughout Ukraine that provide mental health and psychological support, counseling, and case management for complex family and child trauma cases. Voice of Children leverages its strong network and reputation to deliver targeted humanitarian aid tailored to community needs—including food, clothes, and other essential items. 

• LifeLine Ukraine’s vital suicide prevention hotline was also relaunched thanks to the support of donors like you. This lifeline provides 24/7 mental health crisis support to Ukrainians affected by the war and is unique for its ability to continuously operate during electricity blackouts caused by strikes. Their team supports the mental health of vulnerable groups in Ukraine, including the LGBTQIA+ community, and collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health to provide these essential services.

• Brokers without Borders is helping Ukrainians sort through the destruction left by Russia’s relentless airstrikes the past two years. Their Ukrainian-led team focuses on emergency repairs of buildings, removal of dangerous landmines, disease control, and medical sector resourcing—including providing urgently needed medicines to hospitals. With GlobalGiving’s support, they are working to complete multiple highly needed infrastructure repair projects that will benefit communities across Ukraine.

• Ukrán Remény Egyesület (URE) is creating networks of care for Ukrainians forcibly displaced to Hungary due to the war through education and community integration support. URE offers courses at its center to help Ukrainian children in Hungary overcome language barriers hindering their education. As a small organization meeting a crucial need for a population often left behind, even modest support fuels its programming for several months. Your gift provided crucial funding for URE’s administrative costs, such as rent for its Center, allowing the organization to focus on its team's long-term sustainability and expanding its vital services. 

• Carpathian Foundation Slovakia also supports the needs of Ukrainian refugees displaced to surrounding countries. Their team supports civil society organizations (CSOs) in Eastern Slovakia, including organizations focused on education, child protection, and aid for refugees in the region. The Carpathian Foundation of Slovakia also provides a continuum of care in partnership with local CSOs in Ukrainian cities, and through its strong ties with the Carpathian Society of Ukraine. Importantly, CFS also uniquely ensures continued services to the marginalized Roma community displaced by the war, who are often overlooked in humanitarian aid and local service provision.
