We have launched a survey to assess the situation of Congolese refugees in the Republic of Burundi, where Terra Renaissance has an office, just as we do in DR Congo.
Following the armed invasion by the rebel group M23, a growing number of people have been forced to flee Congo and seek safety in Burundi.
According to UNHCR, the influx of asylum seekers has surged since February 14. As of February 20, nearly 39,000 people in need of international protection have arrived in Burundi.
Assessing the Needs on the Ground
Terra Renaissance Burundi office staff visited the Refugee Transit Center in Rugombo District, Cibitoke Province, where a stadium and a school have been repurposed to provide temporary shelter for refugees. The number of arrivals is increasing daily.
The United Nations and the Burundian government are working to consolidate critical information, including refugee numbers and which organizations can provide specific types of aid.
A Severe Shortage of Supplies
Right now, all essential supplies are running low. While UN agencies have emergency stockpiles, even resources for Burundi’s own internally displaced people—many of whom were uprooted by severe flooding—remain insufficient.
Terra Renaissance is committed to reaching those who are most in need, particularly those who are difficult to access. We will continue to coordinate with other aid organizations to ensure no one is left behind.
